[24,8] When was the first book of the Bible was written? [25,8] The two most useful ancient writing surfaces were papyrus and parchment. [26,8] Wherever the use of papyrus and parchment prevailed, for many centuries the form of the book was the roll or scroll. From Originals to Copies 23

Pictured here is the 1600-yr-old New Testament codex called the Sinaitic Manuscript. [27,9] The roll form of a book gave way to the codex. This is the Roman term that was used to refer to a book with leaves (similar to our books today). From Originals to Copies 24

[28,9] There are two other very important codices that are used to create our modern translations of the New Testament. They are the Vatican (AD 300’s) and the Alexandrian Manuscripts (AD 400’s). From Originals to Copies 25

Dead Sea Scrolls ❖ Dated to 100 BC ❖ Contained a few whole OT books ❖ Contained several hundred OT Fragments (with almost every book of the OT represented) ❖ When compared to the copies from AD 900, no significant difference in the text!!! From Originals to Copies 26

[32,10] The New Testament came into existence gradually also, although the books themselves were written during a much shorter time span, from A.D Coming into Existence: NT 29

[33,11] In copying the Old Testament, Jewish scribes followed a very strict rules. These rules were employed around 500 BC. Copies of the Bible

[34,11] The earliest copies of New Testament writings were probably made for the local church by some member of the congregation. As the number of Christians grew, it was necessary to have more and more copies for new converts and for translations into other languages. Copies of the Bible
