Uranium Mines During the Cold War (arms race between USA and Soviet Union—modern Russia), uranium was discovered on the Spokane Reservation At the time, the Atomic Energy Commission was offering large sums of money to people who could bring them uranium (for use in nuclear arsenal) Eventually, began to supply nuclear power plants instead of the AEC

Current Day Mine closed in 1981 Left over uranium pits hold over 500 million gallons of contaminated water About 33 million tons of radioactive waste rock and ore remain at site

Increase in Cancer Rates? Although a study began in 2011, no new information about this has been released A similar situation—Hanford Nuclear Reservation— reached the conclusion that the elevated cancer rates in the area were closely tied to the uranium mining practices in the area, and billions have been spent in clean up In 2008, a federal judge ordered a 152 million dollar clean up at the Spokane mines, but not much has been done in terms of clean up so far Some progress towards recognizing and addressing this concern, but not much research indicates major breakthrough

Little Falls Dam Before installation of the dam, salmon migrated up the Spokane River, and the Spokane tribe fished them in abundance, usually trading the salmon with neighboring tribes After the Washington Water Power Company built Little Falls Dam, the fishing site at Spokane Falls was destroyed Then the Grand Coulee Dam was built, devastating fishing for tribes

Accounts: We had awful good fishing on the Spokane river. There was a Washington Water Power dam at Little Falls. We had to run to there until Grand Coulee Dam... everybody ate fish. You could go down to the river in the morning and catch 8-10 fish. People still fish a little. You used to be able to catch all you wanted. Accounts: We lost quite a bit. What we got from the claims payments was just peanuts compared to what we lost. We have to go to the Coast hatcheries to get salmon for our dinners here. When I was younger I went fishing at Chief Joseph dam. I'd get 80 or 90 salmon and put them in the freezer, then I'd have dinners and give them away. By the end of the winter they were all gone. I like that. At Keller and Kettle Falls they didn't sell their salmon. If someone wanted any, they'd just give it to them. If someone had huckleberries, they'd trade those for salmon, or if someone had a lot of deer meat, they'd trade that. -- Alex Sam, Colville Elder, 20 September 1999
