“ 2 nd week of Ordinary time Year C ” “Do whatever he tells you. ”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John R/ Glory to you O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. R/ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

In those days, family honour was of vital importance. Weddings usually lasted for seven days, during which time food and wine supplied by the bride’s and groom’s families flowed freely. To run out of wine either implied a lack of hospitality or a lack of money. Running out of wine would bring dishonour upon the family name. As a personal favour, Mary turned to her divine Son, Jesus, for help. Her friends and family was about to be shamed in the community, and she knew her Son could do something about it.

Jesus responded when his Mother Mary asked him for help for her friends and family. He performed his first miracle, even though he had not been ready to show people who he really was. He helped his Mother, Mary.

Throughout history Catholics have prayed for Mary to support them in their prayers to Jesus.

There have been incidences of Mary appearing to people of pure heart in different parts of the world, encouraging their prayers.

Mary prays for us. We ask Mary to pray for us. Together we pray to God and Jesus Christ.

And so we ask too that Mary takes our needs to Jesus. We think of the children who have been forced to leave their homes through war, and now seek a safe place to live; that they may find a safe haven and be welcomed. We think of those who are sick; that they may be free from pain and recover soon. We pray for our families and friends and all those we love, and all those they love; may the Lord give them peace and happiness. We ask Mary our Mother to intercede for us to her Son, as we say: Hail Mary …

Lord Jesus Christ, we know that all things are possible for you. Help us to do what you say, as Mary advises us. Help us to be good sons and daughters, honouring our parents, as Jesus was. Help us to see the needs of others, as Mary did, and always do what we can to help, so that the world may become a better place. Amen.
