T HE “R OOKIE ' S ” F IRST Y EAR My 1 st year as a FIS TD

T RAINING FOR THE J OB 20 years as a National TD “Experienced” officials may not be a good thing Timing will not work perfectly Volunteers will be trying their best

F IRST C ONTACT Why? Introduce yourself Know who you are working with Start a positive relationship Experience will teach you what to ask and verify, like will they be installing ‘B’ netting the entire course Developed a ‘Check sheet’ to ask the right questions

P ART OF C HECK L IST ItemResponsibleResponse Homologation ReportTom/PierrePierre will check Insurance CertificatePhilPhil asked for copy from ACA TD Costs AccommodationsPierrePierre to set up and notify me. Meals TransportationTomBy vehicle Course Crew Numbers B nets availablePhilDiscussed on Nov 17 lots available A nets requiredNot Required Piste preparationMcCulloch run Before During ForerunnersPhilSent Phil new rules Jury Radios Chief of Gates and #’s AccommodationsPhil to set upI will pay for (Nov. 5 phone call) High Speed InternetPierreAsked for in Hotel. Have at race headquarters

A RRIVING E ARLY Why??? Is the course crew working on course or finished? Is the Chief of Race, Race Secretariat, Chief of Timing available? Is 12pm OK? What about 2pm? What about just before Team Captain’s Meeting?

T EAM C APTAIN ’ S M EETING Suggestion to switch Men’s and Ladies’ races. Any issues? Does the first Team Captain’s meeting start on time? Does the computer assisted draw always work perfectly?

R ACE D AY There is a wind at Tremblant At what degree of wind flex on a gate does the jury postpone the race? At what temperature does the jury postpone the race? How many jury members do you need to cover the McCulloch GS course at Tremblant?

Start Referee Chief of Race Referee TD Finish Referee

Start Referee Chief of Race Referee TD Finish Referee Assistant Referee

R ACE D AY Can you run Men and Ladies on the same course? If you work a race near Montreal, you will probably get a visit from the ‘Boss’ What is ‘Sufficient amount of ‘B’ netting for a race? What does it take to move the race to a non- homologated piste? Does the Course Length matter for a Slalom race?

T IMING Is ‘mini computer stored’ hand timing appropriate? Does System ‘A’ always work? What do you do if after the race you find out that System A didn’t print, but able to download times to the printer? What if last two racers aren’t recorded on tape? What if racer A get’s racer B’s time?

O FFICIAL R ESULTS There will be changes after a Timing Program revision is issued. Calling Ted at 10pm on Friday before Christmas may not get the assistance you need. If posted official results are not accurate (racer A got racer B’s time) what do you do? If Timing Report indicates a problem, FIS may request the Timing Tapes Who keeps the timing Tapes?

R ADIO C OMMUNICATION Does setting protocol prior to the race work? What is the radio protocol for a ‘Stop Start’ sequence? How/who clears the course? Wearing a helmet. What are the concerns? Who can temporarily stop a race? How does someone generate the proper communication on terminating an unsafe race?

S UCCESSFUL R ACE No injuries No one gets injured between the gates Minimize the injuries outside the gates Justifiable results Results are posted and accepted by FIS ROC is satisfied

C ONCLUSION Terminated a race due to weather Sufficient ‘B’ netting still an issue Radio communication needs work Timing systems will fail Last minute assignments test you A diesel truck doesn’t start at -35C in Tremblant Ted does have a life outside skiing but has communication issues after 10pm on the weekend

Q UESTIONS Why does the TD have to arrive early? Can you have a computer assisted draw? At what degree of wind flex on a gate does the jury postpone the race? At what temperature does the jury postpone the race? Can the TD appoint extra jury members? Can you run Men and Ladies on the same course? What does it take to move the race to a non- homologated piste? Does the Course Length matter for a Slalom race?
