Sex Linked Genes The Xs and Ys of Genetics. Sex Linked Genes There are 23 pairs of chromosomes and one of those pairs are the sex chromosomes. There are.
AUTOSOMES= The first 22 pairs of homologous chromosomes. All of the chromosomes surrounded by the red box are autosomes or autosomal chromosomes.
Sex Determination Of the 46 chromosomes, 2 are designated sex chromosomes (X & Y) the rest are designated autosomal.

 Genes are found on the X AND Y chromosomes.  Genes that are carried on the sex chromosomes are called sex linked genes.

Chapter 14: The Human Genome
Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes (total of 46. One pair of chromosomes is related to the sex of an individual, these chromosomes are called sex chromosomes.

S EX - LINKED T RAITS

A. What are they? 1. -involve genes that are located on a sex chromosome 2. -Assume on the X unless stated that it’s the y

B. Review: 1. regular chromosomes = autosomes 2. Sex chromosomes = non- autosomes; contain genes that influence development of becoming male/female

C. Inheritance Pattern: 1. genes can still be dominant, recessive, codominant, etc. 2. Females get two copies of the genes because females have two X chromosomes.

3. males get only one copy of each gene because they only have one X chromosome (from mom) 4. if the gene is on the y chromosome (y-linked) males get one copy (from dad) and females do not get the gene at all. 5. passage of sex chromosomes:

D. Examples 1. Hemophilia

2. Color blindness (most common type)

3. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

4. Hypertrichosis (Werewolf disease)
