THE PLAINS INDIANS Calhoun Academy

Where were the Great Plains? Plains Native Americans lived on the Great Plains of central North America from north of what is today the Canadian border to present-day southern Texas.

Shelter The Indians of the northern Great Plains lived in earth lodges. Each round earth lodge was home to several families.

Shelter About twice a year the villages emptied as the men, women and children took part in a great buffalo hunt. During their hunts they built shelters that were easy to move called Teepees.

Food Because most of the land is dry Plains Native Americans settled along rivers and grew crops such as corn, beans, squash, and pumpkins Buffalo was plentiful, therefore it became a major source of meat for the Plains Natives

Physical Environment Flat region Millions of buffalo Grasslands Most of the land is dry Used every part of the buffalo that they hunted: shoes, clothes, shelter,

The buffalo were an important resource to the Indians of the Great Plains. Plains Indians often disguised themselves in wolf skins when hunting.

Culture/Region Held powwows with traditional dances and games No written language
