Native Americans The First People

Native Americans Scientist think that they came to this continent from Asia. Each tribe used whatever resources were available to them in their environment.

Native American Regions Southeast Northeast Southern Plains Northern Plains Southwest Northwest

Natural Resources Deer Fish Birds Rabbits Fruit/nuts Lakes (water)

Eastern Woodlands The Eastern woodland tribes were hunters. They ate their meat and used their hides for clothing. Some woodland tribes like the Algonquin and the Ojibwa lived in Wigwams. Woodland tribes also grew crops. The Algonquin tribe settled here.

Eastern Woodlands The Iroquois settled and lived in this region. They hunted, fished, and farmed to get their needs. They lived in longhouses.

Plains The Plains people lived in vast grasslands. The Sious Native American Tribe settled here. The Plains tribes hunted animals such as buffalo. They used horns to make cups and spoons. The skin was used to make clothing, homes, shields and drums. Their homes were tepees. A Tepee is a cone-shaped home.

Plains The Plains people were farmers and gatherers. They farmed rich land of the Missouri River and Platte River. The bones were used to make tools, arrowheads, and pipes.

The Southwest The desert southwest is a hard place to live. The Hopi lived in this group. They lived in Pueblos. They were farmers. They grew cotton and other plants. They depended on trade for resources that were not located in their area. They would make pottery and baskets for trade.

The West These groups of Native Americans lived in lands from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast. Formed large trade networks which allowed them to get goods from far away.

The Northwest Coast This region stretched along the Pacific Ocean. It includes Washington, Oregon and British Columbia in Canada. The Haida group lived in this area. They hunted, fished, and gathered nuts and plants. The rivers and coastal waters were an important resource. Salmon was a main food source for this group. Whales gave them food and oil for burning.

The Northwest Coast This group lived in lodges. They built boats called dugouts to hunt whales, travel, and trade. Made up a new language for trading.

Arctic The Arctic area is near the North Pole. The Aleut lived along the coast. These groups hunted animals such as foxes, seals, and whales. The seals were used for their meat and skin. The skin was used to make clothes and tents. Whale oil was burned to light and heat homes. Animal bones were used to make tools

The Sub-Arctic The Cree people hunted and gathered plants to meet their needs. They used trees for wood. The wood was used to make bows and arrows to hunt animals.
