Self -Control What is self- control? Self-control is the ability to control oneself, particularly one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations. RespectResponsibility Safety

Self-control is the ability to override an impulse in order to respond appropriately. We use self-control when we… …eat carrots instead of Krispy Kreme donuts. … forgive instead of “freaking out.” …pay attention instead of participating in distractions.

What does self-control do for us? Self-control helps us manage motivational conflicts. A motivational conflict is when motivations clash in ways that prevent action. People have many motivations, most of which benefit themselves and society. Our motivation to eat arises out a natural concern to ensure our own survival. Motivations to seek affiliation and to protect ourselves and loved ones from harm also offer examples of basic, fundamental motivations that promote individual and collective well-being RespectResponsibility Safety

How can you demonstrate self- control? At school: – Coming to class with everything needed to get to work rather than being unprepared – Remembering and following directions rather than needing to be reminded – Getting to work right away rather than procrastinating – Paying attention rather than getting distracted – Raising your hand and wait for your turn to speak – Staying focused on your work – Keeping your hands to yourself – Walking quietly in the hallway – Trying your best Socially: – Remaining calm, even when criticized or otherwise provoked, rather than losing your temper – Allowing others to speak rather than interrupting – Being polite to all, even when stressed or angry SafetyRespectResponsibility

Watch the videos and then discuss the following questions with a partner: 1. How did the characters in each video demonstrate self-control? 2. What is an area in your life where you may need to practice applying more self-control? 3. What will you do to show more self-control? Self-Control Self-Control Video 2 RespectResponsibilitySafety
