Standard English and Formal Writing What is Standard English and why do we need to use Standard English in our writing? Formal and Informal Writing– What is the difference? How can we make our writing more formal? Webster’s dictionary defines ‘amulet’ as… vs. Joseph Campbell in his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, defines ‘amulet’ as…

What is concise writing? Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell. — William Strunk Jr. in Elements of Style Make all your words work!

Ways to do this Getting rid of redundancy in writing--- Instead of “12 midnight”, use “midnight” Instead of “end result” use “result” Instead of “cooperate together” use “cooperate.”

Trimming sentences further Reducing Clauses to Phrases, Phrases to Single Words– Example: Citizens who knew what was going on voted him out of office. Knowledgeable citizens voted him out of office.

Phrases you can omit As far as I'm concerned, there is no need for further protection of woodlands. Write instead: Further protection of woodlands is not needed. Omit phrases like “at the present time,” “ as a matter of fact.”

Practice in Concise Writing Please take turns to post a piece of writing you think is wordy and we can offer you suggestions on how to make it more concise. Who would like to post first?

Any Questions about Unit 2? Let’s move on to Unit 3!

Let’s review: What amulets and helpers exist for Composition students? What is Standard English and why is it important? What are the differences between informal and formal language? What is concise writing? How can we make our writing concise?

What is invention? What other names is it known by? Why is the invention step necessary?

What invention (prewriting) strategies do you use? Freewriting? Listing? Bubbling? Clustering? Observation? Discussion? Annotating? Outlining? Etc.?

What is a paragraph? Let’s hear some ideas from you on what a paragraph is. The paragraph is a group of unified sentences that generally express one main idea. The topic sentence summarizes the main idea of the paragraph

What is the relationship of the body paragraph to the entire essay? What does it mean to “develop” a body paragraph? The body paragraph structure: What is the structure of a body paragraph? I.Topic sentence A.Supporting Sentence 1.Supporting detail 2.Supporting detail B.Supporting Sentence 1.Supporting detail 2.Supporting detail C.Supporting Sentence 1.Supporting detail 2.Supporting detail D.Closing Sentence

Workshop in paragraphing What should the body of the paragraph do? The body should explain and develop the idea put forth in the topic sentence. Let us start building a paragraph Suggest some possible topic sentences.

Let us now get some practice For the topic sentence we have picked, let us add some sentences to create a body We also need to consider transitions between sentences and between paragraphs. How should we conclude our paragraph?

Concluding your paragraph What should your final sentence of your paragraph do? How should you conclude your paragraph Consider now if you have fully developed the topic sentence of your paragraph.

Unit 2 Assignments (due tomorrow) -Seminar (this one!) -Discussion Board (Volunteering) Unit 3 Assignments (due at the end of next week) Seminar (next Monday’s – will cover Unit 4) Discussion board (crossing the threshold Project (1 paragraph)
