+ Andy Warhol’s Early Life Parents: - immigrants from northeastern Slovakia - Andrej and Julia Warhola - had three sons - Andy was their youngest Started taking pictures and developing them at age 9 Took free art classes as a child Andy Warhol: - born Andrew Warhola - from Pittsburgh. PA -Graduated High School 1945 at age 16 Illness age 8 -confined to bed with rare disease (Chorea – affects nervous system) - entertained by drawing, tracing and printing images

+ Andy Warhol’s College Years Click here to see Warhol’s art during college: – attended Carnegie - Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) - earned a BFA in Pictorial Design with the goal of becoming a commercial illustrator - Moved to New York immediately after graduating college Worked in the display department at Horne’s –introduced to a high sense of fashion Popular in college for his unique solutions in art (which displeased some professors) Andy Warhol The Lord Gave Me My Face, But I Can Pick My Own Nose, 1948 Oil on board 36 ½ x 18 in.

+ Warhol 1950’s – Job Success Continued Throughout the 1950s Warhol illustrated: - fashion ads - books - record albums - other promotional items He created innovative advertisements for I.Miller, a popular shoe company

+ The 1960’s – Warhol the Fine Artist From Illustrator to Fine Artist: - experimented with using advertising and comic strip imagery as his art - subject matter for fine art was untraditional and unique at the time - early paintings had a loose, unfinished look - painting style evolved into being more flat and graphic One consistent aspect – the images were known to everyone in everyday life

First major Exhibition July 9,1962 Warhol had his initial major exhibition in Los Angeles. Today, the complete set of 32 soup can paintings from that exhibit can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. WHY SOUP?

+ Pop Art is MmMm-Good! The Campbell's Soup Can became his primary subject - gained Warhol his greatest notoriety He and several other artists working on similar themes, but in different styles, were linked together in a New Art Movement called Pop Art. POP ART: Focuses attention upon familiar images from the popular culture especially images seen in the mass media

– Silk-screening added to Warhol’s “bag of art tricks” Mass Producing His Prints: Warhol discovered the silkscreen process - A printmaking method - perfect method to repeat his images Silkscreening: - a stencil method of print making

– Warhol dabbles in Film-making began to experiment as a filmmaker -his “underground” art films caused quite a stir in the art world - The word “Superstar” originated with the women of his films such as Viva, Ultraviolet, and Edie - his studio in midtown New York became well-known as “The Factory.” Viva Ultraviolet Edie

+ The Factory - Warhol’s Film-Making Studio Andy founded “The Factory” - A studio and hang-out for a group of his eccentric friends including drag queens, musicians, sexual radicals, models, drug dealers, free-thinkers and other oddities Such as: Artist, Salvador Dali Rock star, Mick Jagger Author, Truman Capote Rock Band, The Velvet Underground

+ Warhol Shot 1968 Andy Warhol was shot by Valerie Solanis, an unstable individual who visited “The Factory” - He was in very critical condition for several days but slowly recovered - traumatic event marked a major turning point in Warhol’s life Mom and sister after he was shot

+ Post-Pop Period 1970’s-1980’s The years following the shooting: The Factory changed considerably: -no longer the open, free-flowing place it had been -Warhol’s paintings were less risk- oriented and therefore did not shake the art world as it had in the 60s

+ The Society Portrait The important accomplishment during the 70’s and 80’s was Warhol’s reinvention of the Society Portrait -it became the primary focus of his painting until he died

– Warhol’s Magazine - Interview Celebrity Gatherings Warhol became a part of New York’s “Jet Set” -He documented and reported on celebrity events with his camera and tape recorder During this time Warhol stated his most famous quote: “In the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes.”

+ Warhol’s Death February 22, 1987 Warhol was hospitalized to have his gall bladder removed The routine operation appeared successful - he died mysteriously during the early morning -died age 58
