Hook- Point of view video

Mini-Lesson On the board write down all the different points of view that a novelist uses. For example, first person, second person, third person. Discuss with the students how each point of view is used before dividing the class into groups and assigning them each a point of view. The students should then individually choose a short scene in the book and rewrite it using their particular point of view. End the lesson by looking at the students' work and discussing what difference the point of view makes to the meaning of a story.

Hook- Review Chapters 6-8 Abstracts to jog the students’ memories. * Chapter 6: Jakkin and Kkarina, the cook, talk as Jakkin eats and Kkarina tells Jakkin about how she worked in the baggeries in order to earn her freedom. * Kkarina chooses to work as a cook rather than elevating her position as a master or master's wife and she is very happy with her chosen life. * Chapter 7: Jakkin wakes and learns that Sarkkhan allows Likkarn to keep his single room. * When Jakkin leaves the bondhouse, he notices a drakk flying overhead, which he ignores for the moment in order to go check on the new hatchlings. * At the dragon nursery, Jakin studies over the new hatchlings and notices that the count is off and that there is one more hatchling than listed. * Jakkin steals the extra baby dragon who sends a burst of rainbow colors to Jakkin's mind as Jakkin carries the young one off. * Chapter 8: Jakkin carries the young dragon to the oasis he has prepared while thinking of all the work it will take to train his dragon. * Jakkin and the young dragon play and the two fall asleep side by side. * When Jakkin leaves the dragon, he wraps it in his shirt to comfort the dragon. * Jakkin does not quite make it back to the bond house before Dark After and collapses just outside, but is rescued by Akki, who drags him inside. Review the abstracts above and address questions.

How did they describe events using details and description? How did dialogue contribute to their story and reveal point of view? How did the story change using the point of view of this character?

Work Session Narrative constructed response: In the poem, “Being Connected,” the speaker has a different opinion about telephones than the grandpa does. Consider the tone and the emotions expressed by the grandpa. Use this information as a starting point to write an original story about the speaker and grandpa told from the point of view of the grandpa. The story should have the same characters and the same theme as the poem. Use details, dialogue, and description to develop the characters, setting, and plot.
