Overview of Basic Astronomy

About 400 years ago Galileo’s used first telescope to study the skies

On July 21, 2009 man landed on the moon

Earth and Our Solar System

What do we know about it in terms of Astronomy … What do we know about it in terms of Astronomy … The Earth is our home in a vast galaxy The Earth is our home in a vast galaxy

Night-time lights on Earth Night-time lights on Earth

Our planet in daylight! Our planet in daylight!

Eight planets in our Solar System Eight planets in our Solar System

On August 11, 2009, Saturn, made its 170,000-mile-wide ring system disappear. Saturn has been performing the "ring plane crossing" illusion about every 15 years.

Relative Sizes of Earth & Moon

Moons of Planets Mercury – 0 Moons Venus – 0 Moons Earth – 1 Moon Mars – 2 Moons Jupiter – 63 Moons Saturn – 61 Moons Uranus – 27 Moons Neptuse – 13 Moons As of March 2009, there are 167 moons of 8 Planets

Pluto is now considered as a dwarf planet. A "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that: (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass, (c) is (nearly round) shape, and (d) has NOT cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

Asteroids & Comets Asteroids are small celestial bodies composed of rock and metal that move around the sun and are round/irregular shapes. Comets are a chunk of frozen gasses, ice, and rocky debris that orbit the Sun. When a comet nears the Sun, heat vaporizes the icy material producing a cloud of gaseous material that looks like a tail, called a coma.

Meteor-Shower This happens each summer as the Earth's orbit takes it through debris scattered by the tail of comets.

Let’s take a look beyond our Solar System... Solar System...

Brightest Stars 1Sirius 2Canopus 3Arcturus 4Alpha Centauri A 5Vega 6Rigel 7Procyon 8Achernar 9Betelgeuse 10Hadar (Agena) 11Capella A 12Altair 13Aldebaran 14Capella B 15Spica 16Antares 17Pollux

Conclusion Just ponder, whether this vast galaxy and thousands of galaxies like this have come into existence by themselves, or there is a creator of all this??? Think seriously !!!
