Turning the tap off when cleaning your teeth saves 3600 litres a year. If everyone turned the tap off while cleaning their teeth we’d save enough water in a year to fill the millennium dome!!
Be a Water Detective 1.Draw a plan of the establishment 2.Identify different areas of the business – Office/front desk/activities centre/rooms/restaurant/coffee shop/caravan pitches 3.Make a list of the different ways that water is used in each area

Action - General Report any leaks, dripping taps, running or overflowing toilet cisterns immediately and make sure that maintenance gets them fixed! Don’t leave the taps running unnecessarily while you clean
Action - Kitchen Wash up in a bowl of water Don’t run the dishwasher until it is full – plan ahead Clean vegetables in a bowl of water rather than under running water Kettles – only fill with as much water as you need Fill jugs of table water and chill them in the fridge Don’t turn on water using appliances such as woks, steamers, peelers and waste disposal units unless and until you need to use them Check the overflow on the ice machine
Action - Laundry Wait until you have a full load before you run the washing machine Choose economy settings and use the correct amount of detergent Use the towel agreement cards provided free by South West tourism Towels in the bath or shower tray mean please change them
Action - Outside Only water when needed and then water well Water plants in the evening or early morning Use a watering can instead of a hose pipe Cut the grass less often and on a higher setting Wash vehicles using a bucket Sweep up and remove leaves and garden debris from paths, terraces, pool surrounds instead of cleaning with a hose pipe Cover up Don’t turn on then walk away

Case Study (south west water) A trickle feed urinal with a 6 litre cistern, flushing 4 times per hour, every hour of every day cost £682 a year to operate at current SWW charges for water & sewage.
