NQT Induction Information for Short Term Supply Teachers

Outline Introductions LA (EAS) responsibilities WG - Induction Guidance (Sept 2012) EAS Website – NQT Section – where to find documentation Key Processes – GTCW (Tracking and Finance) – EAS (Induction Profile) External Mentor Role Collecting and submitting evidence against the Practising Teacher Standard (PTS) Q&A for individual issues

EAS (LA) Role “The appropriate body has the overall statutory responsibility for the supervision and training for all NQTs and for making the final decision at the end of the induction period as to whether the NQT has passed, failed, or requires an extension to their induction. In SE Wales, the 5 LAs have delegated the responsibility for the day to day management of Induction to the EAS.

EAS – Who to contact AreaWho to Contact Contact Details All ADMINISTRATIVE QUERIES, and submission of documentation Business Support Mark all queries NQT-STS-Name Concerns about INDUCTION PROGRAMME or Individual NQT Edward Pryce MEP and MENTOR MANAGEMENT / NQT Allocation Lorraine Hunter is usually the best contact method, as we are often out at schools during the day

WG Induction Guidance (Sept 2012) This guidance document describes the arrangements for induction as set out in legislation Page 9 for information on STS, but worth being familiar with whole document Does not give ALL the detail you require!

Short Term Supply (STS) NQTs Significant changes from September 2012 STS teachers can undertake induction a session at a time What is a “Session”? – defined by ‘pupil attendance’ Must be the ‘specified work of a teacher’, so cover supervision does not count. ALL sessions must count, but you do need to ‘log’ them in 2 ways (more later) If you are employed for a contract of more than 10 days, then schools ADVISED to register you as under their support External mentors (EM) allocated after 190 sessions (more later) STS need to signpost evidence against each of the 55 areas of the practicing teacher standard. NO prescribed ‘Portfolio’ but an Induction Profile to log evidence against. (more later on collecting evidence).

Key Induction Processes

GTCW Processes

English: fessional-development Guidance from GTCW Cymraeg: essional-development

Step 1 Initial notification Body/individuals responsible NQT What action? Complete the: Induction as a Short-Term Supply Teacher Notification Form By when? Once it has been established that you will be undertaking induction as a short term supply teacher but at the very latest within 10 working days of the commencement of a period of induction. To where? The Induction and EPD Funding Team at GTCW Other important information If you complete the entirety of your induction period (380 sessions) via the short term supply teacher route without any breaks from the profession or without switching to the induction programme available to teachers employed on a regular basis (see section 4.0), Step 1 will only need to be completed once. If you take a break from the profession or switch between the induction programme available to teachers employed on a regular basis and the induction programme for short term supply teachers, Step 1 will need to be completed at the beginning of each period that you will be commencing/continuing induction as a short term supply teacher.

Step 3 Logging periods of employment Body/individuals responsible NQT What action? Must log each period of employment of a session or more with GTCW using GTCW’s web access system – please refer to section 5.3, page 16 for more information regarding the way in which GTCW will record and share this information. By when? Within 15 working days of having completed the period of employment. If you fail to meet this date the period of employment will not count towards your induction. To where? The Induction and EPD Funding Team at GTCW

Step 4 (GTCW) Step 4Completed 190 sessions Body/individuals responsible GTCW What action? Will notify the NQT, in writing, to submit their interim induction profile to the Appropriate Body. This notification will be sent using the teacher’s home address as held on the register of qualified teachers. Will notify the Appropriate Body that the NQT has completed 190 sessions and has been instructed to submit the interim induction profile to the Appropriate Body.

Step 5 Submit interim induction profile Body/individuals responsible NQT What action? Must submit the interim induction profile to the Appropriate Body. To where? The LA as the Appropriate Body in induction File name:STS-TRN-Surname-Forename-LA-IP1 Eg:STS Pryce-Edward-Caer-IP1 Details later on what needs to be submitted.

Step 6 (GTCW) Step 6Completed 380 sessions Body/individuals responsible GTCW What action? Will notify the NQT in writing to submit the induction profile to the Appropriate Body which will form part of the teacher’s assessment against the Practising Teacher Standards (PTS). Will notify the Appropriate Body that the NQT has completed 380 sessions and has been instructed to submit the induction profile to the Appropriate Body which will form part of the assessment against the Practising Teacher Standards (PTS).

Step 7 Submit induction profile Body/individuals responsible NQT What action? Must submit the induction profile to the Appropriate Body. To where? The LA as the Appropriate Body in induction File name:STS-TRN-Surname-Forename-LA-IP2 Eg:STS Pryce-Edward-Caer-IP2

Step 8 (EAS) Step 8Induction outcome Body/individuals responsible Appropriate Body What action? Will judge whether the NQT has passed, failed or requires an extension to their induction. Will notify GTCW of the outcome of induction. By when? By a date stipulated by GTCW, in correspondence with the Appropriate Body directly. To where? The Induction and EPD Funding Team at GTCW

GTCW Web System NQTs should also maintain evidence of the number of sessions completed towards induction in their induction profile. Access to important information during induction As set out in the Welsh Government guidance there are a number of parties involved in the teacher’s induction. These parties will need to view and exchange specific information in relation to the teacher’s programme. The information will include the NQT’s induction employment details and the number of induction sessions completed. GTCW has developed a web based system which will enable the collation of this information and minimise duplication and bureaucracy for all involved. The NQT, and the NQT’s school, External Mentor and Appropriate Body, will, with the appropriate authorisation, be given secure access to this system to view and update as necessary. GTCW will provide details of how to access this system within the written acknowledgement to the NQT following receipt of the initial induction notification.

Documenting EVIDENCE of meeting PTS

This section records evidence of how you meet each of the PTS. Against each standard you should indicate the evidence that exists of how you have met the standard. Entries should be brief and may signpost to where the evidence exists. The record should be progressively completed throughout your induction period so that evidence is recorded as it occurs. You may update your evidence at any time if, for example, you wish to refer to evidence that you consider to be stronger than that previously recorded. Section 3 – Documenting Evidence

EM Role for STS (Induction) Will both support and evaluate through – Visit to advise on collection of final evidence – Visit for a lesson observation with agreed criteria and feedback, based on progress towards meeting the PTS Make a recommendation to LA (EAS) on whether you meet the PTS and should pass your NQT year.
