CH 21 PROTISTS AND FUNGI 21.1 Protist Classification

Protists  Eukaryotes that are not members of the plant, animal, or fungi kingdoms  First eukaryotes  Many are unicellular some are multicellular  Great diversity  Euglena, brown algae, diatoms, and slime molds.

 Recent studies divide protists into six major clades  Each could be considered a kingdom.

 Split between Archaea and Eukarya may have come as early as 2.5 billion years ago.
