 It is the role of the state to  ensure social justice  Protect human dignity and rights  promote the common good.  The government should be a positive and moral institution.  People need the government to help them fulfill their responsibility to society.

 Rerum Novarum  Published in 1891 by Leo XIII  Describes the role of government in a just society  Condemns atheistic communism  Upholds the right to private property.

 Rerum Novarum was published to address the problems that arose during the Industrial Revolution  The Pope clarified that it is the State’s job to promote social justice by protecting the rights of the people

 Quadragesimo Anno  A ‘Social Encyclical’ published in 1931 by Pius XI  Establishes the principle idea of subsidiarity All social bodies exist for the sake of the individual Society should not control what individuals are able to do  Condemns greed and concentrated power  Wrote as a “reconstruction of the social order” set by Rerum Novarum

 America wanted its’ own government  The US government recognizes that all humans have “inalienable rights”  Our CST would support the new government set up because it is “for the people, by the people”
