WARM UP 1.Draw and label the structure of a nephron. 2.Briefly describe what happens at each structure you labeled.

Lymphatic System

Functions Collect drained water and proteins and return them to blood Disposes of pathogens and cellular “junk”

Basic Structure Lymph vessels – Collect and distribute water – Collect and carry “junk” to lymph nodes Lymph nodes – Filter fluid and destroy invaders

Recognition and Disposal Antibodies in nodes attach to specific pathogens Lymphocytes recognize the antigen marker and digest/destroy those cells

Lymphatic Organs Tonsils – One of many lymph nodes Thymus – Produces antibodies Spleen – Major pathogen filter

WRAP UP Edema is swelling due to fluid. What does this have to do with the lymphatic system?

WARM UP 1. Explain how the lymphatic system fights invaders, using the words antibody, lymphocyte, lymph vessel, and lymph node.

WRAP UP Write how much time you would need to study to get each of the following percentages on your test: 100% 90% 80% 70% 60%
