Climate Change: How can technology make a difference?

Today’s Goals: -Be able to describe a technology that could lessen climate change and global warming and explain how it works.

Technology 1: ‘Green’ cars People like cars but cars emit a lot of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. But what if cars didn’t emit as many gases??? *Fuel efficient cars use less gas to run *Alternative fuel vehicles run on other kinds of fuel like natural gas or hydrogen *Electric vehicles are powered by electricity

Technology 2: Capture methane gas and use it for energy Methane is a very harmful greenhouse gas. One pound of methane traps 25 times more heat in the atmosphere than a pound of carbon dioxide. It also can be used for energy. What if we could use it for energy AND stop it from being released?? *Trash/manure breaks down and creates methane *The methane is captured *Methane is used to create energy

Technology 3: Capture carbon dioxide and store it We produce A LOT of carbon dioxide. What is we could stop it from reaching the atmosphere? *Carbon dioxide is produced and captured *It is sent in pipes underground to a safe holding place *It is them pumped really far below the Earth’s surface (up to half a mile) *The site is monitored to make sure there are no leaks.

Assignment 6: Part 3 Visit the website and learn more about one of these technologies (and others that interest you.) Complete the assignment before the test. *It is due on Moodle the day of your test. *Study guide: I can describe and explain a technology that could lessen climate change
