Pollution Indicators Starter What do you already know about water pollution? List as many ideas as you can. 11 June 2016

By the end of the lesson I will be able to: Recall the possible causes of water pollution Explain the effects of water pollution on organisms living in the water Apply knowledge of invertebrate animals and use them as natural water pollution indicators. Pollution Indicators

Unpolluted Rivers Usumacinta River, Guatemala Oklawaha River, Florida Simikiha River, Florida The Dordogne, in France

POLLUTED RIVERS Fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides. Factory outlet. Valdez oil disaster. Industrial waste. How does water become polluted? Sewage, fertiliser and toxic chemicals commonly pollute our waterways. Some ways in which water can become polluted are summarised here:

What happens when a river or stream is polluted? Pollutant is added, which kills some living things Microorganisms decompose them, the microorganisms respire and use up oxygen Lack of oxygen kills other organisms, but a few stay alive As the water flows, oxygen levels gradually increase Other living things recover too Explain the effects of water pollution on organisms living in the water

Pollution indicators When a habitat is polluted, it changes Organisms that are not well adapted may move away or die out Some organisms that are adapted to live in polluted areas may move in Invertebrate animals are often used as indicators of water pollution

Research Task Work in pairs Visit the 4 information stations Research each of the invertebrates Complete your summary table Questions will follow!

Name of Invertebrate Level of oxygen needed Lives in polluted or unpolluted water?

Sewage pollution and invertebrates InvertebratesOxygen levels Lives in polluted or unpolluted water? Rat-tailed maggot LowPolluted Tubiflex worm LowPolluted Caddis fly larva Fairly highUnpolluted Stonefly larva HighUnpolluted

Apply your knowledge – Pollution Indicators TASK: Complete ‘Nasty Pollution’ worksheet. Extension: 1.Why are fish considered to be good pollution indicators? 2.What could be done to prevent sewage pollution accidents?
