NSERC Doctoral Eligibility Criteria To be eligible to apply as of November 25, 2014: be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; hold, or expect to hold (at the time you take up the award), a degree in science or engineering from a university whose standing is recognized by NSERC (if you have a degree in a field other than science or engineering, NSERC may accept your application at its discretion); intend to pursue, in the following year, full-time graduate studies and research at the doctoral level in an eligible program in one of the areas of the natural sciences and engineering supported by NSERC; and have obtained a first-class average (a grade of 80%/A-) in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent). 2 Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies
NSERC Doctoral – Where to Apply Registration Status at Time of Application Note: The term “degree program” corresponds to all degree programs and not only those in the natural sciences and engineering. On-line application system – Form 201 (Application for a Postgraduate Scholarship) must be submitted electronically. Print the instructions for Form 201 – (PGS D). Notes: The Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral will be referred to as “CGS D” in this document, and the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship-Doctoral will be referred to as “PGS D’’. If you are interested in a CGS D, apply for a PGS D. There is no separate application form (or process) for the CGS D Program. The highest-ranked PGS D applicants will automatically be considered by NSERC for a CGS D. Applications must be received at NSERC by the deadline date. NSERC Doctoral – Transcripts If you are already registered in your program of study at the time of application, you must submit an official transcript for this program, regardless of the number of months completed, to demonstrate registration in the program. This requirement also applies to programs of study started in the Fall session of the year of application. NSERC Doctoral – Reference Letters Two academic reference letters are required for the application. Reference letters are submitted electronically through NSERC’s online system. Reference letter cannot be completed by a proposed supervisor unless that person is, or has been, the applicant's supervisor. NSERC Doctoral – Competition Results Students will be notified by , after November 25, 2014, as to the status of their application, whether it was sent forward to NSERC. Tri-Agency Harmonization of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) have formed a Tri-Agency Harmonization Team to redesign the Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Master’s and Doctoral components. Doctoral component will be introduced for next year’s competition. There will be a single application for all students across Canada via a newly developed Research Portal. The application is easy to complete, and requires the student to complete a short version of the Canadian Common CV. Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies 11
CGS Master’s Deadlines Application deadline (date by which the complete application must be submitted by the applicant): December 1. Applications must be submitted before 8:00 p.m. (ET) on the deadline date using the Research Portal. If the deadline falls on a weekend, your application must be submitted by the following working day.Research Portal Results deadline (date on which institutions may begin posting their competition results using the Research Portal): April 1 of the following calendar year.Research Portal Acceptance and declines of offers: Applicants will have 21 days from the date of each offer of award to accept or decline. If an offer of award is accepted, the system will automatically set all other offers and alternate statuses to “Declined”. NSERC CGS Master’s Eligibility Criteria To be eligible to apply, you must: be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; be enrolled in, or intend to apply for full-time admission to a graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level at a Canadian university with a CGS M allocation; have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in: – the master’s program for which you are requesting funding; or – the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program (you were never registered in a master’s program, or you are registered in a combined Master’s-PhD program); or – a master’s program, but are requesting funding for a doctoral program (an example is a student who is fast-track from a master’s to a doctoral program within 12 months of starting their Master’s and is seeking funding for the first 12 months of their doctoral program); and not have previously held a CGS M; have achieved a first-class average (80%/A-), in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent); and submit a maximum of one CGS M application per year, the Research Portal will allow the application to be submitted to up to five universities. 13 Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies

NSERC CGS Master’s – Outline of Proposed Research Outline of Proposed Research (Attachment) The attachment has a limit of two pages and must adhere to the following: a maximum of one page can be used for the outline of proposed research; and a maximum of one page can be used for citations. Provide a detailed description of your proposed research project for the period during which you will hold the award. Be as specific as possible. Provide background information to position your proposed research within the context of the current knowledge in the field. State the objectives and hypothesis, and outline the experimental or theoretical approach to be taken (citing literature pertinent to the proposal), and the methods and procedures to be used. State the significance of the proposed research to a field or fields in the health sciences, natural sciences and/or engineering or social sciences and/or humanities, as appropriate. 19 Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies
NSERC CGS Master’s – Outline of Proposed Research If you have not yet decided on a specific project, you must still provide a detailed description of a research project that interests you. You are not bound by this project. You may change your research direction or activities during the course of the award. Certain restrictions may apply. Refer to the respective CGS M guide for award holders for NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR. In addition: Applicants are expected to write their own research project independently. Ideas and/or text belonging to others are to be properly referenced. Include all relevant information in the outline. Do not refer reviewers to URLs or other publications for supplemental information. In the Outline of Proposed Research, provide the requested information according to the guidelines and format standards outlined in the Presentation Standards. 20 Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies
NSERC CGS Master’s – Attachments Text must be single-spaced, with no more than six lines per inch. The acceptable font is Times New Roman (regular, minimum 12-pt.) or any comparable serif font. Condensed type is not acceptable. Set margins at a minimum of 2 cm (3/4 of an inch) all around. Use a left-justified, standard page layout. Include your name in the page header (on every page). For multipage attachments, number the pages sequentially. The maximum number of pages permitted is indicated in each section of the application. Pages in excess of the number permitted will be removed. If you have supporting documents written in a language other than English or French, you must provide a translation of the document in English or French. All attachments must be in PDF format before they can be attached to the electronic application. 21 Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies
NSERC CGS Master’s – Transcripts Transcripts must be scanned in black and white, and all transcripts saved as a single PDF file. You must include one copy of the legend located on the reverse of each transcript, to help the reviewers understand the grading system at your university. Do not scan the legend multiple times. Up-to-date transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies must be scanned as indicated above and uploaded by the applicant in the appropriate section of the application. Transcripts must be those provided to you from the university, not a copy of your Web transcripts. If you are already registered in your program of study at the time of application, you must submit a transcript for this program, regardless of the number of months completed, to demonstrate registration in the program. Up-to-date transcripts are defined as transcripts dated or issued in the fall session of the year of application (if currently registered) or after the last term completed (if not currently registered). 22 Brock University Faculty of Graduate Studies

NSERC CGS Master’s – Competition Results April 1, Results Announced. Competition results will be announced through the Research Portal. Students may only accept one CGS M offer. If they accept an offer, they will be deemed to have declined any other pending offers (if applicable).
