Welcome to Bio Club! March 6 th 2012 Research Opportunities, Graduate School, Baltimore and Department news

Baltimore Itinerary  Friday:  Noon: Leave Geneseo  3PM: Stop at Reptiland  6PM: Check in at hotel  7:30PM: Dinner at the Hardrock Café  After dinner, free time to explore the city

Baltimore Itinerary  Saturday  6-10AM: Continental Breakfast at the hotel  10AM: Leave for ? Spend a couple of hours exploring and looking around  1PM: Free time to explore the city and do as you please, lunch and dinner are at the expense of the individual

Baltimore Itinerary  Sunday:  6-10AM: Continental Breakfast at the hotel  10AM: Leave for ? Spend a couple of hours exploring and looking around  1PM: Spend a couple of hours exploring the inner harbor, lunch is at the expense of the individual  3PM leave for Geneseo  9PM Return to Geneseo

Cost and What is included:  Approximately $130  Includes:  Bus  Hotel  Continental breakfast  Dinner at the Hardrock Café  Admission to  Reptiland  Two of the following three: Aquarium and Science Center

Research  Tons of Research at Geneseo  Counts as 399 Credit (4 max)  Great for Grad School or Med school

Before Starting  Make sure you have time to commit  And that your professor can match it  Figure out why you are doing research  Decide what you want to do research on  Not who to do it with

What to look for:  A professor who has interest in your interests  Look online at their research background  A professor you can work with  Talk to other students in their lab  How the lab is run  Independent v. Professor guided

How to ask  Simple answer: Just ask  Making asking easier:  Know about the professors research  Ask early (a semester or two before you want to start in the lab)  Ask in person

Graduate School  Not everyone needs to go to med school  PhD, M.S or MD/PhD  PhD: 4-7 years, paid position  M.S: Shorter 2-4 years, unpaid position  MD/PhD: 7-8 years, paid position  Any subject you want can be a PhD

Grad School cont.  Make sure you want to do research for a career  Grad school is not just the next step after college  Be prepared for a lot of work

Prior to applying  Do research  Unless you have a 4.0, basically required  Get letters  3 letter of recommendation required  Take the GRE  Not that bad, basically the SAT part 2  Need MCAT for MD/PhD  Research Schools

Applying  First round of deadlines: December 1 st  Application parts:  3 LOR  Personal Statement  Official Transcripts ($5)  GRE Scores ($23)  Online Application  Application fee ($0 - $100)

After applying  Hear back starting in January  Some schools are earlier than others  Get invited to an interview  (Awesome weekend)  Get final decision ~2 weeks later  Make your decision by April 15 th
