 Be able to explain the importance of communication to you and to business.  Be able to describe the main challenges facing business communicators today.

 Businesses want and need people with good communication skills.  Without exception, communication (especially written communication) ranks at or near the top of the business skills needed for success.

 Communication is the most used skill in almost every job. How you communicate your accomplishments to others is a reflection of the quality of your work. Sure, you must know how to do your tasks to accomplish great results, but that is only a portion of professional success. Good communication skills are required to report your results to others, persuade colleagues to take action, and (most importantly at review time) sell your successes to management.  Communication is essential to building trust and teamwork among employees. To become a successful leader, you must have a great team. Just look at Michelangelo.  All of this communicating goes on in business because communication is essential to the organized effort involved in business.  Simply put, communication enables human beings to work together.

 There are three specific challenges that face businesses today! The ongoing development of new information technologies. The increasingly global nature of business. The growing diversity in the workplace and in the types of workplaces.

 According to businesspeople, educators, & librarians students need to develop these four types of literacy to do knowledge work. Verbal literacy Information literacy Technological literacy Visual literacy

 Working with those from other cultures is likely to be in your future. 1. Your assumptions about business and communication are not shared by everyone. 2. Business people from other countries may have different attitudes about punctuality and efficiency.

3. They may differ from you in their preference-or lack thereof-for directness and show of emotion. 4. The core features, such as their preference for individualism or collectivism, their religious beliefs, their political environment, their idea about social hierarchy, and their attitudes toward work itself can make their view of how to do business quite different from yours.

 Businesspeople, from whatever country, generally share certain goals and values.  It will be your job to as a cross cultural communicator to learn about and honor others’ cultural orientations in a way that both partners can work together for mutual benefit.

 We will continue to see more diverse workplaces. Involving; Both sexes Various cultures All ages working together!  Each of these factors are fueling the need to handle diversity on a daily basis.

 Because of these diversity issues and others, company structure both socially and structurally are causing a demand for a myriad of organizational structures.  What would be some of the reasons that this would be important?
