S O Y OU W ANT TO D O U ROLOGY ?

Scope of Urology ● Urology deals with diseases of the male & female urinary tract as well as male reproductive organs ● Subspecialties: ● pediatric urology ● urologic oncology ● renal transplantation ● male infertility ● calculi ● female urology ● neuro-urology

Scope of Urology ● Procedures ● nephrectomy ● adrenalectomy ● Prostatectomy ● urogynecological slings ● transurethral bladder/prostate resection ● neo-bladder creations ● lithotripsy (shooting up kidney stones) ● urodynamic studies ● Cystoscopy ● pediatric hernia repair

Academic Years ● 1 st & 2 nd Year try to do as well as possible ● Grades only matter in the sense that Junior or Senior AOA is a noteworthy distinction ● Summer between 1 st & 2 nd Year ● Research with the prospect of a publication is important but not utterly necessary ● Step 1 & Step 2 ● Scores are important (<220, unlikely to match?) ● failing is pretty damaging

Clinical Year 3 ● Try to honors surgery ● Take OB/GYN prior to surgery ● Take medicine prior to surgery ● Surgical Subs ● will expose you to urology without the pressure of a sub-I as well as better prepare you for the Surgery Shelf ● Explore other specialties during this time if you’re uncertain about urology ● Consider doing your Urology Sub-I as an elective during 3 rd year

Clinical Year 3 ● July: off to rock Step 2 CK ● August: away rotation (or uro sub-I if not done) ● September: away rotation ● October: research or neuro/advance med ● Late Oct to Mid-Nov: easy elective or off for interviews ● Mid-Nov to Mid-Dec: easy elective or off for interviews ● Mid-Dec to Early Jan: easy elective or off for holidays ● January: neuro/advance med ● February: elective/off or neuro/advance med ● March: elective/off ● April: elective/off

Urology Sub-Internship ● 4 weeks at the locations of your choice ● you plan it one-on-one with Dr. Sufrin ● Suburban ● WNY Urology group is a big time player in WNY, best hands-on experience, more money-makers than teachers ● WCHOB ● Dr. Greenfield is relatively well known in the urology community, not as much hands-on time in the OR as you might like ● Roswell ● Mohler, Guru, Schwaab, lots of research, good cases/exposure ● ECMC ● good cases/exposure, but surgical subs students may get in your way

Away Rotations ● Most people tend to set-up an away rotation at one place ● AUA recommends only 2 months of urology (sub- internship + away rotation) ● However, if your application is limited in some way, an extra away rotation may help secure an interview and show your abilities in person ● Keep in mind, that Buffalo’s schedule and the away institution’s schedule might be off by a week, and an elective with scheduling leeway (TA-ing, emergency medicine, urology research) might need to bookend that rotation (or you could have a vacation or study for CK)

Research ● Urology is a field that looks highly upon research and publications ● Dr. Sufrin will help set-up a case review or other small potential publication once you are ready to commit 100% to urology ● In 2012 graduating class ● 1 applicant worked extensively w/ Roswell faculty, WCHOB, Boston (after 1 st summer) ● 1 applicant w/ Roswell faculty ● 1 applicant Ped surgery research

Electives to Consider ● Useful ● Urology Research ● TICU (or SICU for Advance Med) ● Infectious Diseases ● Anesthesia ● Radiology ● Urogynecology (through OB/GYN) ● “Useful” ● Radiology ● TA Anatomy ● TA Neurology ● Forensic Path ● Emergency Medicine

Step 2 CK & CS ● Register as soon as possible for CS and pick a potential date; dates fill-up much faster than you think. ● Programs will look closely at Step 1. A good Step 2 CK can make-up for a poor Step 1, but it will still be a red flag on your application. ● Even if you do well on Step 1, consider taking Step 2 CK by the start of November (that way, if you rock Step 2 CK as well, you can still make it part of your application, but not necessarily need to report it if it is not as hot). ● Take Step 2 CS in before October; just get it out of the way and do not let it interfere with interview season.

Application Timeline ● End of 3 rd Year – ● begin research for away rotations and apply ● begin personal statement ● meet with Dr. Sufrin (discuss research possibilities) ● complete urology sub-internship ● Summer of 4 th Year ● start away rotation(s) ● request letters of recommendation ● complete application ● register for AUA ● September 1 st ● submit application through ERAS (important to get it in early because interview invites start soon thereafter) ● 10/1ish to 12/10ish ● Interviews!! ● Early January ● Match List Due ● Late January ● Match Day for Urology!

Application ● Slots ● Offered 278 (122 non military programs) ● People registering for AUA: 481 ● Rank lists submitted: 381 (79%) ● Ranked by programs: 355 ● Matched: 274 ● 57% of total, 71% of those submitting lists ● US Seniors→ 77% ● International→27% ● US Grads→55% ● Women→ 68% ● How many programs should I apply to? ● Avg # applications: 49 ● Avg # interviews: 10 ● Amount will be determined by your competitiveness ● Besides the cost, there is no downside to applying to as many programs as possible (and often people are surprised by places they never thought about) ● The average Step 1 score is usually mid/upper 230’s.

Letters of Recommendation ● Dr. Sufrin – as the chair & PD, he will write a composite letter, but meet with him early & often, so he’ll remember you; he is highly respected and regarded, particularly in NY ● Urology #1 – from a sub-I location ● Urology #2 – from a sub-I location ● Urology #3 – away rotation ● General Surgery #1 – not necessary but often worthwhile (could be replaced by another non- surgical attending who would speak highly of you) ● Pick and choose 3 or 4 to send to programs

Types of Programs ● 1, 4 (1 year of general surgery, 4 years of urology) – 78 programs ● 2, 4 (2 yrs gen surg, 4 yrs uro) – 27 programs ● 1, 5 (1 yr gen surg, 5 yrs uro) – 10 programs ● 0, 6 (no gen surg, 6 yrs uro) – Northwestern ● Military Match – 5 programs ● The extra year in 6-year programs is often dedicated to research ● Programs have 1 to 5 residents/year

Double Applying ● Don’t tell letter writers. ● A backup plan not a bad idea if you are borderline competitive

Urology Resources ● American Urology Association ● ● Urology Match (forum/discussion) ●
