The writings of Mildred Taylor often are about the south during the period of segregation and focus on themes of race and inequality. After reading “The Gold Cadillac,” “I, Too, Sing America” by Langston Hughes, and researching the era of Jim Crow, identify the race issues that the characters in the story and in the poem face in life. How do the characters in “The Gold Cadillac” deal with the issues of discrimination that they face? How does the narrator in “I, Too, Sing America” deal with it? Both the poem and the story deal with issues of inequality and racism, but they are expressed differently. Compare and contrast the theme of racism as expressed in these two works. How do the characters show traits of perseverance and determination? Remember to cite evidence from your readings. March 23, 2007 Kristi Hartley Taylor County Middle School
