Who is Langston Hughes and what is the Harlem Renaissance? X0http:// X0

A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? What do you think the word deferred means? Identify the similes in this poem: What is the message Langston Hughes is trying to send to his readers?

“To You” by Langston Hughes To sit and dream, to sit and read, To sit and learn about the world Outside our world of here and now- our problem world To dream of vast horizons of the soul Through dreams made whole, Unfettered free – help me! All you who are dreamers, too, Help me to make our world anew. I read out my dreams to you. Who do you think Hughes is talking to? What does he want his readers to do? How does this poem connect to his life and childhood?

“Thank You M’am” Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. Remember the terms exposition, rising action, climax, resolution and setting while reading the story.

I, Too I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I'll be at the table When company comes. Nobody'll dare Say to me, "Eat in the kitchen," Then. Besides, They'll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed-- I, too, am Americahttp://

Before we read…  An African proverb says, “It takes two parents to produce a child, but it takes an entire village to raise the child.” Think about this proverb as we read the story. Try to pull out your own theme from the story. cQ
