Overview New Standards, Changes in Practice Three Domains of Competence: Supporting Learning Classroom Climate

New Standards, Changes in Practice

CCRS

Transferable Knowledge and Skills

College and Career Ready Standards Reason abstractly and quantitatively Communicate reasoning about concepts Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Engage with complex texts Use evidence to inform, argue, analyze Obtain, evaluate and communicate information

Changes in Practice

From Delivering Instruction

To… Supporting Learning )

WHY? Learning is the Property of the Learner Students actually DO the learning

From: Traditional Lesson Paradigm (NCTM,2014 ) Review Demonstration Practice

To :

Three Domains of Competence: Supporting Learning

Three Domains of Competence (NRC, 2012) Cognitive Responsibility Decision-making Analysis Negotiation Self-Presentation Adaptive Learning Critical Thinking Leadership Conflict Resolution Reasoning/argumentation Executive Function Collaboration Interpersonal Problem Solving Communication Assertive Communication Information and communications technology literacy Social Influences With Others Active Learning Interpretation Self-Direction Cooperation Innovation Responsibility Grit To deconstruct the definition of deeper learning further, the researchers came up with what they call three domains of competence: cognitive, intrapersonal and interpersonal. Cognitive refers to reasoning and problem solving; intrapersonal refers to self-management, self-directedness, and conscientiousness; and interpersonal refers to expressing ideas and communicating and working with others. Creativity Flexibility Teamwork Self-Evaluation Integrity Adaptability Intrapersonal Metacognition Perseverance Self-monitoring Imitative Productivity Citizenship Appreciation for Diversity Career Orientation Continuous Learning

4/28/2017 Connected Learning Explain what learning progressions are

Supporting Learning 1 2 Multiple representations 3 Discourse 1 2 Multiple representations 3 Question, explain, model, prompt 4 Practice 5 Feedback )

Interpersonal

Supporting Learning 1 2 Express Opinions and Ask Questions 3 Extended Discourse 1 2 Express Opinions and Ask Questions 3 Careful Listening and Openness to Ideas 4 Share and Build on Ideas 5 Feedback )

Intrapersonal

Supporting Learning 1 2 Set Goals and Make Plans 3 Monitor and Reflect 1 2 Set Goals and Make Plans 3 Adapt Learning Strategies 4 Use Feedback 5 Persevere )

Your Turn Notice how the teacher: Provides feedback to students; Connects next steps to current learning; Uses a mentor text; Enables students to engage in discourse; Places responsibility on students for thinking about improvements.

Classroom Climate for Learning

Reflects Social and Emotional Well-Being Learner and learning centered Routines, participant structures, expectations Respect and sensitivity Appreciation of differences Individual and group responsibilities

Summing Up

Summing Up CCRS call for deeper learning and transferable knowledge and skills Changes in current practice resulting from CCRS Supporting learning Conducive climate

And Finally….

Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn. - Benjamin Franklin

Thank You!
