STRIDE Teaching positive life changes!

What is your eating IQ? What percentage of overeating is caused by emotional eating? A)34% B)55% C)75% D)92%

C) 75% -Roger Gould, M.D., a UCLA psychiatrist who studies overeating finds that most people falter on their diet and exercise plans due to having a bad day, a fight with a spouse/loved one, inability to manage stress, etc. -Taken from to an interview posted on the University of Maryland website

Is the statistic surprising? Emotional hunger isn’t located in the stomach. Rather you feel your hunger as a craving you can’t get out of your head. You’re focused on specific textures, tastes, and smells. Emotional eating is used to soothe anxiety, guilt, stress, anger and BOREDOM.

How much of the U.S. population is now considered overweight? How much is now considered obese? A)45% and 10% B)50% and 15% C)65% and 30% D)70% and 40%

C) 65% of the U.S. population is now overweight and roughly 30% is obese. It is considered an epidemic by the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health. -Survey by World Health Organization

Goals of Stride Record what you eat and how much you exercise Reduce caloric intake Increase fruit and vegetable intake Work toward averaging 180 minutes of moderate activity a week

Can you guess which food has the most calories? Which has the least?

Each has 500 calories

Responses in STRIDE “Well, no one is going to order half a Cinnabon!” “You don’t eat just a beef patty; you eat it with a bun, cheese and other toppings that make it a lot more than 500 calories!” “Spinach has very little calories.”

What is a serving? STRIDE program teaches difference in portion vs serving – Serving: a standardized amount of food that can help you compare the nutritional and calorie content of similar foods (for example, how does a 1 cup of Cheerios compare to 1 cup of Cocoa Puffs) – Portion: actual amount of food that is eaten during your meal. A portion may be smaller or larger than the standardized serving size Discusses ways to visualize servings Reviews diet recommendations Example: The American Heart Association recommends 6.5 ounces of lean protein daily for males ages Are you able to visualize 6.5 ounces?

3 ounces of meat/fish=one deck of cards

3 servings of dairy are recommended for men and women aged years old 1 serving of cheese = four dice

Portion differences: 1950 and 2015

Portion differences around the world Japan’s rate of obesity= 3%

STRIDE DISCUSSION What about “super foods”? Should we be eating more of those? Keep in mind, “super foods” and “gluten free products” still have calories. Eating too many healthy foods can lead to weight gain. Example of discussion: “Almonds, I hear they are so good!”

Exercise and STRIDE Group exercise as part of each session. Pedometers for each member Focusing on increasing overall activity each week

Calories in vs calories out

Or, keep it simple and make half the plate veggies!
