British-American romantic comedy-drama film Released in 1998 Won seven Oscars Directed by John Madden Written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard The fiction story Based on real people for several of the characters Involving Shakespeare and the play “Romeo and Juliet” References to some Shakespeare’s plays

Will Shakespeare not only has double sold his next play but is bereft of ideas to complete the play. He is in search of his muse, but all attempts fail him until he meets the beautiful Viola. She loves the theatre and wants to take to the stage but only men can be actors. She is also a great admirer of Shakespeare’s works. Dressing as a man and going by the name of Kent, Viola auditions and is ideal for a part in his next play. He sees through her disguise and they begin a love affair, but he is already married and she has been promised to the Lord Wessex.

Will and Viola play out the famous balcony and bedroom scenes. They are not ultimately destined to be together. Will and Viola play out the famous balcony and bedroom scenes. As Shakespeare's writer's block is introduced, he is seen crumpling balls of paper and throwing them around his room. They land near props which represent scenes in his several plays: an open chest (The Merchant of Venice). The Merchant of Venice Viola is the lead character in Twelfth Night who dresses as a man after the supposed death of her brother. Twelfth Night Shakespeare writes a sonnet to Viola which begins: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" Sonnet 18 In the boat, when Shakespeare tells Viola, disguised as Thomas Kent, of his lady’s beauty and charms, she dismisses his praise, as no real woman could live up to the ideal. This is a set up for Sonnet 130, “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun”. Sonnet 130
