 “medically unexplained illnesses”  Somatic Symptom Disorder->  TYPES:  Conversion Disorder-> (functional neurological symptom disorder) Person experiences genuine physical symptoms for which no physiological basis can be found.  Illness Anxiety Disorder-> (used to be called hypochondriasis)

 Definition->  Fugue state-> when a person’s conscious awareness is said to dissociate (become separated) from painful memories, thoughts, and feelings.  Type-> Dissociative Identity Disorder (used to be called Multiple Personalities)

 Usually not violent  Example- Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde  “Hillside Strangler” Kenneth Bianchi :  Some skeptic about the true existence of this disorder…is it just a sort of “role-playing” for fantasy-prone people?  Other cultures would call this “possession” by an alien spirit, etc. Others think DID is an “American fad”  But, some see marked changes with different personalities->

 Take a minute to review Eating Disorders-> we did this in Motivation unit.  Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating show up in the DSM as a psychological disorder.

 Definition->  Clusters:  A: ___________________________(ex: Schizoid Personality Disorder-> emotionally disengaged)  B: _____________________________(ex: Narcissistic Personality Disorder-> self-focused and self-inflating) Antisocial goes here as well  C: _____________ (ex: Avoidant Personality Disorder-> fearful sensitivity to rejection so withdraw from society)

 Most troubling and most heavily researched of psychological disorders  Definition->  What do they look like? Typically male, starts by 15.  Genetic links  Show low levels of stress hormones when subjected to shock, before committing a crime. Low anxiety.  Lack a sense of social responsibility  Biological:   Childhood maltreatment comes into play. Mixes with genetic factors like increased sensitivity to the maltreatment-> vulnerable to antisocial behavior  Hyper-reactive dopamine reward system->
