What We’ll Cover … Background and Architecture Evolution of Reporting How We Got From There to Here The Next Level – Business Objects Lessons Learned Wrap-up
How We Got from There to Here This was not done overnight Key to success was to take on new functionality one step at a time ○ We identified specific projects or enhancements that lent themselves to looking at data in alternate ways ○ We tackled these projects one at a time, so we could focus on the business question/problem and ensure we were deploying the best possible solution
How We Got from There to Here (cont.) Maximize learning and networking We kept connected to the wider SAP community (SDN) to make sure we were up to date on functionality ○ Utilizing the bulletin boards and blogs to share information and problems with other customers is key to growth
How We Got from There to Here (cont.) We learned how to use and maximize the tools we had and took every opportunity to learn new functionality ○ Conferences and Webinars ○ SAP Developers Network (SDN) Web wite ○ BI Expert (subscription, but worth every penny) ○ Networking with other SAP customers
How We Got from There to Here (cont.) Connect with the business We worked with key stakeholders in the business to align to our business priorities and to ensure we always had sight of the “big picture” We were always available to do additional training and knowledge transfer to our end users as required When a simple report was what was required, we produced that report – Often a simple list report does the trick
How We Got From There to Here (cont.) Aggressively patched and upgraded SAP NetWeaver BI (BW) In 2003, SAP Business Information Warehouse BW (SAP BW) 2.1C In 2004, SAP BW 3.0 In 2006, SAP NetWeaver BI 7.0 In 2007, SAP NetWeaver BI Accelerator implemented (now BWA) Q Enhancement pack 1 SPS 3 Q Business Objects integration Patch cycle is 4-times per year ○ We have done this so often that we can now do a complete patch cycle in 2-3 weeks without disrupting normal operations and development work Keeping current allowed us to exploit new functionality quickly
How We Got From There to Here (cont.) BI team — Mix of business and technical expertise Understanding the business is key in working with our stakeholders Knowing what the your BI tools’ capabilities are is instrumental in proposing the right solutions to answer a business question or problem Close partnership with the business helps to identify problems and opportunities All team members regardless of their role are cross functional in most areas and on-going knowledge transfer within the team is a regular activity
SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator Implementation of SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator allowed us to go to the next level with real-time reporting now a reality All queries now run in the accelerator therefore the SAP NetWeaver BW database is now free during the day No longer slaved to day-old data ○ Supply chain decision makers now have the ability to see what is happening on the production floor every minute via BI widgets deployed on a central monitor without ever having to log on to an SAP system
SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator (cont.) Greatly reduced time required for system maintenance BI team now spends most of its time developing new analytics and improving currently deployed content
Where We Are Now Currently implementing: ○ Global SAP HR ○ BCS Upgrade ○ SAP Customer Relationship Management (SAP CRM) in Canadian division (non SAP) ○ SAP for UK division Business Intelligence systems in place ○ SAP NetWeaver BW 7.0 EP 1 in US and Canadian divisions ○ Business Objects Enterprise for Global SAP BW ○ Business Objects on legacy data warehouse in UK division
Where We Are Now (cont.) SAP BW tools we are currently using include: ○ BEx Analyzer (available in SAP NetWeaver BW 7.0) ○ Web Application Designer (SAP BW 3.x) ○ Widgets ○ Broadcasting (SAP NetWeaver 7.0) Business Objects tools we are currently deploying include: ○ BusinessObjects™ Web Intelligence ○ BusinessObjects Xcelsius
What We’ll Cover … Background and Architecture Evolution of Reporting How We Got From There to Here The Next Level – Business Objects Lessons Learned Wrap-up
The Next Level – Business Objects Web Intelligence (WebI) and Xcelsius, available through Business Objects Although the current SAP NetWeaver BW tools can produce excellent reports, dashboards, and cockpits, the development of these has been mainly restricted to the BI development team due to the complexity of the tools ○ As IT departments get smaller this is not a good position to be in if you wish to remain agile.
The Next Level – Business Objects (cont.) Goal has always been to give the end user the ability to create their own formatted reports Web Intelligence and Xcelsius ensure data integrity while enabling the end user to produce what they need when they need it without reliance on their BI IT organization Increased agility speeds informed, decisive business decisions
The Next Level – Business Objects (cont.) Web Intelligence and Xcelsius Implementation of these tools will allow users to easily analyze data in a more visual way with the ability to publish the results in a highly formatted manner without having to rely on an already overloaded IT reporting team Data integrity will be maintained as users will not be downloading and manipulating data outside the system The ability of Web Intelligence to be used off-line will support reporting when access to an Internet connection is unavailable
After successfully piloting BOBJ in Q we are currently implementing Web Intelligence and Xcelsius in the Canadian Division First roll out April 2009 of WebI offline reports deployed to French sales reps in Canada. The Next Level – Business Objects (cont.)
The Next Level – Business Objects (cont.) Next Steps Role out WebI to English Canada sales reps (May/June 2009) Role out Xcelsius and WebI for all Marketing & Sales in Canadian Division (Q3 2009) Convert UK BOBJ users to Global BOBJ Enterprise Edition and pilot Xcelsius (Q4 2009)
