- Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade Report on UNESCO World Conference 900 participants (53% male & 47% female) from 147 countries A brief overview of each programme element & to highlight the outcome highlight the essential contribution of ESD to all education & to achieving quality education (“Why is ESD relevant?”). promote international exchange on ESD (“What can we learn from each other?”). Environment, society & economy, with culture as an underlying dimension. carry out a stock-taking of DESD implementation (“What have we achieved so far, what are the lessons learnt?”). develop strategies for the way ahead (“Where do we want to go from here?”).
The opening session set the context of the Conference Plenary sessions - DESD Monitoring and Evaluation process; adopt the Bonn Declaration Twenty-two workshops addressed specific thematic & strategic issues with regard to ESD. –relevance of ESD for key sustainable development challenges; –building partnerships to promote ESD; –capacity development for ESD; – ESD & the teaching-learning process. Project-based workshops were held in & around Bonn An ESD Projects Exhibition at the conference venue presented 25 concrete good practice projects selected from all over the world “Young ESD Voices from around the World” workshop for 25 young people from different parts of the world who have demonstrated engagement in ESD.

High Level Segment on 31 March The German Federal Minister of Education & Research, Annette Schavan, hosted the session with the president of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education & Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany, Henry Tesch, & the UNESCO Assistant Director-General, Nicholas Burnett (representing UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura). 48 Ministers & Vice Ministers attended the event. Among them were Russian, Swedish, & Kenyan Ministers of Education as well as Japanese, Chinese, & Indonesian Vice Ministers of Education. The participants pointed out the danger educational systems in deprived countries are facing during times of crisis. Moreover, they called the actors of ESD not only in the member states but also on an international level to intensify their cooperation.
Bonn Declaration adopted The participants of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, coming from over 150 countries, adopted the Bonn Declaration on 2 April 2009.
Reflects discussions & is a strategic orientation for the 2nd half of the Decade. Importance of ESD in the current world situation. The global DESD movement aimed at improving knowledge, skills and competencies and strengthening values and attitudes oriented towards a transition to a more just, fair and viable world. Was drafted through a transparent, inclusive, participatory and resultsoriented approach to ensure its relevance (financial & economic crises & global challenges); Emphasis on several key areas: reinforcing the educational response to SD challenges; developing & building capacities for adapting to change; sharing knowledge & experiences; reinforcing synergies between different education & development initiatives. Will serve as the backbone for the development of the post-Bonn process within the framework of the DESD. Government of Japan will host the end-of-decade world conference on ESD The Bonn Declaration
