Wangari Maathai’s leadership style Leaders stimulate, inspire, motivate, encourage, take risks, innovate, empower, challenge, stretch… "Wangari Maathai is not only a pioneering environmentalist, she is a powerful leader of one of the world's most inspiring citizen democracy movements " "Environmental activism may seem like a non- controversial cause, but in fact Dr. Maathai and members of her Movement were imprisoned and they risked their physical safety many time under the previous Kenyan regime of Daniel arap Moi"

Leadership style (cont) Visionary “Environmental restoration, poverty eradication, and world peace are inseparable…” Entrepreneurial She founded the Green Belt Movement 30 years ago (Creator), which has since planted over 30 million trees and spread to other African countries (Proselytizer)

Leadership style (cont) Transformational (Charisma, Inspiration) In the words of Nobel Committee Chairman Prof Ole Danbolt Mjoes while presenting her with the award on December 10, 2004: "Dear Mama Wangari Maathai, You have shown what it means to be a true African mother and a true African woman. Kenya admires you! Africa admires you! The world admires you! May your unceasing fight for the right always remain a source of inspiration for mankind."

Leadership style (cont) Superleadership (Manz & Sims) She understands the real battle is inside: “ordinary people” making that internal shift to realize the power that is ours. Credible leaders (Kouzes & Posner) It showed the power of ordinary people. If they are given a sense of direction, which they know from their own conscience is right, they latch on. To encourage people to take social responsibility, to be aware and take a stand, rather than just complaining and coping.

Leadership style (cont) Coaching Develops people Pacesetting Sets high standards Democratic Forges consensus Affiliative Creates harmony Maathai's genius is in recognizing the interrelation of local and global problems, and the fact that they can only be addressed when citizens find the voice and courage to act.

Leadership style (cont) Jim Collins – Research on leaders 2001 Level 5 Executive She made a call for humanity to turn attention to sustainable management of the environment for the sake of future generations. [There comes] “A time when we have to shed of fear and give hope to each other. That time is now. I’m humbled by the recognition and uplifted by the honor”

Conclusion A woman with strong personal convictions, who in her feat to change society for the better, placed herself in harms way to carry out a vision of sustaining community and the lives of its members. Role Model for African women
