Film Studies Crime Drama By Ryan Murphy

Crime- Crime Drama- Drama For my Film Genre assignment I am selecting crime, crime drama and drama. Crime Drama is one of the most enduring, popular genres in TV, novels, films and theatre. Its intriguing and appealing narrative questions the problems today in policing, criminality, gender, race and social and cultural values. I’m very interested in social realism and my interest in European cinema, content that effects real everyday lives around the world without the fabricated illusion of what life is “supposed to look like” that is created by American motion picture today. A lot of my films selected are all hard hitting gritty dramas, true to what life is like in the real world.

History of Crime Drama Crime films are arguable the most complex analogy of movies that reflex or opinions of moral order and justice. Crime films try to mirror societies with the complexity of real life events. The earliest crime film can be tracked back to the start of the late 19 th early 20 th century, during a time of profiling organized crime and social anarchy. The notable gangster and prison genre declined in the 1940s due to an increase of European techniques and style of expression that became to set a foundation in American filmmaking.

Alfred Hitchcock moved camp from the UK to America bringing with him highly expressionistic styles that were darker, had high shadows, and versatile camera angles. This new style of film became known as film noir. Through the 70’s directors like Francis Ford Capolla, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick brought together the styles of film noir and the and the griping atmosphere of drama to create crime drama.

Classic Crime Dramas The Public Enemy, 1931 Scarface, 1932 Little Ceasar, 1931

Audience Theories – Crime Drama The typical audience that likes to view crime drama and other types of similar movies are people that like to watch gritty, hard hitting, fact based, realistic pictures are not really for the faint hearted or squimish personalities. Common viewers would be adult males, young adolescent males with interest in those hard hitting social realism pictures. There hasn’t been that many copy cat killers but there are some worth mentioning.

Audience Theories Copy cat killers have raised with the batman murders on the premier of The Dark Knight Rises, by a young man proclaiming to be the joker and start firing in the theatre at civilians. Natural Born Killers (1994)- had its own list of arrays when copy cat murders started rising through to the fact a lot of troubled people in the world could relate to the characters.
