printed by How climate effects the growth of corn LeanaJean & Sam Corn predominantly grown in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. Average weather in July -Vancouver, Canada: 64 degrees F, 0.5 inches of rain, 16 hours of sunlight - Madison, Wisconsin: 71 degrees F,0.13 inches of rain, 15 hours of sunlight -Waialeale, Hawaii: 74 degrees F, 1.16 inches of rain, 13 hours of sunlight Corn is planted one inch deep and 9 to 12 inches apart from each other Average temperature that corn grows at is between 68 and 73 degrees F The corn was supposed to grow at its best in the Wisconsin climate, since corn’s usual habitat is Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana While acquiring our data, we measured the height of the plants, in centimeters, on every second day. At the end of the 21 day period, we calculated to average height for each plant. Following the 21 days, we calculated the biomass, and found the averages for each of the different climates. We computed the Standard Deviation test, to see how much variation there was in plant height and biomass, in each climate. Next, we calculated the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The P value was 1.000, concluding that there was not enough of a significant difference between the three tests to be able to conclude that climate had an effect on the growth and biomass of corn. Average height: -VANCOUVER: 41.6 cm -WISCONSIN: cm -HAWAII: 29.1 cm Average biomass: -VANCOUVER: 227 mg -WISCONSIN: 57 mg -HAWAII: 66 mg In the height graph, Hawaii’s growth rate was consistent, until it died on day 19. While, the Wisconsin’s growth rate was at a constant, and on day 16, the plant growth plateaued Plant the corn 1 inch below the surface of the Miracle potting soil 2. 2 seeds in each pot, 9 total pots, equaling 3 pots per climate. Then choose the one that is germinated to grow. 3. a) Tropical mL of water - 13 hours of sunlight from lamp b) moderate precipitation mL of water - 16 hours of sunlight from lamp c) dry conditions mL of water - 15 hours of sunlight from lamp 4. record length daily and repeat step 3 5. calculate biomass at the end of project. We tested the effects of different climates on the height of corn and biomass. The average height of the Vancouver climate was 41.6 cm, the slope of the line on the graph of Vancouver corn height illustrates that rate of growth was The average height of the Hawaii climate was 29.1 cm, resulting in the death of the corn plants. The slope of the Hawaii corn, height shows that rate of growth was 2.73 before its death, after the slope was Furthermore, the average height of the Wisconsin climate was cm, also, the slope of the line on the graph of Wisconsin height show that the rate of growth was The climate differences between the Hawaii, Wisconsin, and Vancouver were insignificant. Computed P values for biomass as well as height was one, thus resulting in an insignificant test. So the different climates did not cause the plant height and biomass to differ. The average biomass of Hawaii was grams. Also the average biomass of Vancouver was grams. And the average biomass of Wisconsin was grams. We believe the difference in plant height was due to the excess amount of water in each of the plant environments. According the video, Launching seed, the plants need a suitable amount of water as well as oxygen to survive. In this case, the corn had too much water and limited amount of oxygen, to survive. There is error in measuring biomass because of microwave malfunction. Our results were not reliable because the biomass was affected by the small fires. As well, there was an effect in height because of the excessive amounts of water and limited amount of oxygen. the corn will show a faster rate of growth and a greater biomass in the Wisconsin climate. Our purpose for the experiment was to evaluate if the climate of differing areas affected the growth of corn. We believed that the corn will show a faster rate of growth and a greater biomass in the Wisconsin climate.
