Lilies You Will Love! Asiatic, Oriental, Trumpet & More! Incredible Color, Fragrance… What more could you ask for in Summer blooming flowers? Diane Hansgen Stearns County Master Gardeners Stearns County Hort. Society St. Cloud Flower & Garden Club Oriental Lily, ‘Willeke Alberti’

Have you ever walked into a garden and be greeted by the incredibly sweet fragrance of an Oriental Lily such as ‘Stargazer’ as pictured here? Deciding on a particular lily isn’t easy-there are thousands to choose from. Let me help you get started choosing the right lily for you.

Hardy Lilies for Minnesota. Bloom Times: Asiatic Lilies: Late May-June -1st to Bloom Martagon (Turk’s Cap) Lilies: Late Spring- May-June (Shade/Woodland) Oriental Lilies: July-August Trumpet Lilies: July-August OT Hybrids: July-August LA Hybrids: July Tiger Lilies: August-Sept.-Latest to Bloom

Planting Basics: The key to success is well-draining soil. If you have heavy black dirt or clay soil, amend it with Mississippi Topsoil, peat moss, or compost. Bulbs will not survive Winter in soils that do not have good drainage. Fertilize early May when actively growing. Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade. (Except Martagon Lilies) Planting different varieties of lilies will ensure blooms/cut flowers all Summer!

Pot Grown Lilies or Bare Root Bulbs: Plant 3-4 times deeper than the height of the bulb. Add Bone Meal or Bulb Food to the planting hole to encourage root growth. Bulbs reproduce by bulblets. Divide/separate every 2-4 yrs. to encourage large, vigorous blooms. Some lilies may need staking.

Martagon lilies are ideal for “naturalizing” in a wild flower border or woodland setting. Somewhat difficult to establish-they resent being moved. May take several seasons to get established & bloom. Very content in a dappled shady area where their roots can be kept cool.

Flowers are somewhat small compared to others, but each stem bears 30 or more flowers in succession giving a long display of color! Once established, the vigorous bulbs multiply, forming dense clumps.

Soft, gentle colors adapt well to woodland settings.

The Traditional Easter Lily A non-hardy longiflorum lily which we’ve not been able to grow as a hardy perennial – until now……
