Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) Presented by Jakil Johnson Period 3

What is PTSD?  A painful event that has servere psychological and physiological effects.  ~ haunting memories  ~ nightmares  A.K.A Shellshocks, mainly developed in members of the Army or Military.

Associated Features  Most people with PTSD cope with painful memories of the trumatic event, which often involve vivid images of seeing…

DSM-IV-TR  Criterion A: stressor  Criterion B: intrusive recollection  Criterion C: avoidant/numbing  Criterion D: hyper- arousal  Criterion E: duration  Criterion F: functional significance

The significance  A. The person has been exposed to a traumatic event  B. The traumatic event is persistently re-experienced in at least one  C. Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma and numbing of general responsiveness (not present before the trauma), as indicated by at least three  D. Persistent symptoms of increasing arousal (not present before the trauma), indicated by at least two  E. Duration of the disturbance (symptoms in B, C, and D) is more than one month  F. The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Etiology  The potentail cause of PTSD is that the brain detects that something is amiss, it seems to generate a mental hiccup of repeating thoughts or actions.

Prevalence  The common rate of PTSD is approximately 8% of the U.S. Population

Treatment  Psychotherapy & Drug Therapy: for anxity & depression.  The patient is repeatedly exposed to a simulated traumatic event in a controlled setting.

Prognosis  Unable to function well in social or family situations. The chance of improvement within the disorder is slim,most likely to develope other disorders.
