Is this advertisement persuasive? O Is this advertisement persuasive? O What is it persuading us to do? O How?

Four Corners O Strongly Agree O Agree O Strongly Disagree O Disagree

So…what does it mean to be persuasive?

Who uses Persuasion?

What does it take to persuade?

Exit Slip – Quick Write O On a piece of looseleaf… Write about a time you feel you were successful in the art of persuasion (getting what you wanted, getting someone to agree with you) O Or Write about a time you were persuaded to do/buy/agree with something. Don’t forget to put your name on your loose leaf

Day 2 Grade 6 Persuasive Learning target: I will know, understand, and be able to determine the thesis of a piece of persuasive writing.

Entrance Slip – Quick Write O On a piece of looseleaf… Write about a time you feel you were successful in the art of persuasion (getting what you wanted, getting someone to agree with you) O Or Write about a time you were persuaded to do/buy/agree with something. Don’t forget to put your name on your loose leaf

Persuasive Writing Learning Target: I will know an essential element in persuasive writing – picking your side/position/stance/thesis

Not always easy to pick a side! _f84

What is a thesis? O Make up your mind O Make a claim O Pick a side O No Flip Flops!!

So when asked… O Your point of view O Your claim O Your opinion O Where you stand on a topic/argument O Your position

People are looking for… YOUR THESIS !!

Can you find the thesis in the following introductions? O Everyone knows that you need exercise to survive. The most common stereotype of exercise is that it is hard, painful, and/or boring, but really it is often more enjoyable sitting on your bum, watching TV. That’s why I want you to come to the pool. “That’s not exercise!” you say. It is a lot more exercise than sitting on your rear-end watching TV!

O Tired, crabby, or unfocused in class? It could be the food you are eating. The lack of healthy and tasty school lunch selections has recently become a problem in almost every elementary, middle and high school across the nation. Most schools sell junk food to students and I think this is wrong. There are many good reasons to remove junk food from school lunch menus, and creating a healthier student body is number one. Junk foods should be taken out of school lunch menus because they affect your body and mind in negative ways.

O I am a movie fanatic. When friends want to know what picture won the Oscar in 2000 or who played the Ironman in The Avengers, they ask me. My friends, though, have stopped asking me if I want to go out to the movies. This is because I have decided that I am not going see a movie at the theatre anymore.

O Who doesn’t have a cell phone these days? The amazing thing about cell phones is that they are no longer just used for calling or texting. They have become an indispensable multi-tool wonder. Today’s cell phone is cutting-edge technology at your fingertips. With this in mind, should students be permitted to use cell phones in school? I believe they should not just be permitted to use cell phones, they should be required to use them. Cell phones don’t just allow students to stay connected with family and friends, they are also an excellent learning resource, and they encourage the responsible use of technology.

What do you want to “stand for”? O List of potential topics? O What form will your writing take? O Who is your audience? How will this impact your writing?
