Thank You Organisation and Promotion Exhibitors Funders and Partners

The Formulation Innovation Network Helping Businesses To Innovate Better in Formulation Facilitate research / knowledge transfer across industry sectors Address future challenges and opportunities Simplifying /enabling access to funding Providing business benefit by accelerating innovation in formulation Brokering collaborative partnerships for companies – e.g. public funded Companies guide our direction Industry Steering Group Industry-led network This Business Collaboration Network is funded by Yorkshire Forward as part of the Solutions for Business portfolio.

Formulation:Technical Strands Formulation for improved delivery Characterisation methods for formulation High throughput and experimental design methods for formulation Modelling for faster/more robust formulation development Improved process and production technology for formulation Formulation of/with natural, renewable or bio- derived ingredients Formulation stability (prediction, measurement, methods to improve) Inputs: Roadmapping exercise as well as other company and academic feedback

Formulation:Technical Strands Proposed Remit: Act as focal point for IF and company activities in this area (communication, information gathering, promotion) Work with companies to develop collaborative R&D programmes in the field of interest. First steps: Understand the scope and remit for the strand Assess "state of the art" (problems, needs, issues, opportunities) Use Formulation Roadmap to provide arguments for focusing on this topic Agree areas of common interest which could be worked up into projects Review possible funding mechanisms Decide on follow up events and activities (open or closed)

Some opportunities from better use of modelling and high throughput methods Improve fundamental understanding of formulated systems Explore many more formulation options – Ingredients, compositions – Better patent exemplification Optimise product properties simultaneously – Optimise cost-performance, product and production Reduce development time and cost

Outcomes and objectives of today Where are the important challenges and opportunities in using these methods in formulation? – Focus on needs of the formulating company – Case studies – what has worked, what needs to work better? Where are the possible solutions to these challenges? – Match providers to needs of formulators – Actual and potential solution providers Where can we work together? – Clustering by common interest – Funding opportunities

Possible Outcomes of Today Identifying partners for 1:1 collaboration Identifying partners for larger collaborative projects Identifying new needs / challenges which require fundamental work Identifying “missing partners” Ideas for further “in-depth” workshops or training...but it’s up to you!

Today’s Programme 1.Framing Session – Case studies from two formulating companies 2.Challenges Session – Review of Challenges – Breakout group session with feedback 3.Providers Session – Panel discussion with solution providers – Funding and collaboration opportunities

Framing Session High throughput and modelling in consumer product development –Dr Oreste Todini, Procter & Gamble, Brussels Innovation Center Industrial case study: –Dr Massimo Noro, Unilever R&D, Port Sunlight

Challenges Session Review of Challenges in Modelling and HT Methods for Formulation –Stephen Hillier, Chemistry Innovation KTN Break out group session: What are the challenges? –Feedback from Group Session Networking Lunch –Posters and Exhibition Posters from academics and company stands

Interactive Workshop Session Six break-out groups, mixed by industry sector, challenger/provider – Please choose a spokesperson. Facilitators provided. Each break-out group to answer 2-3 of the following questions – What benefits (actual or potential, quantifiable) do you see from implementing HT and/or modelling for formulation? – What have been your biggest successes (quantifiable) in implementing HT and/or modelling for formulation? – What are (or have been) your biggest challenges (problems) in implementing HT and/or modelling for formulation? – What information do you still need in order to implement HT and/or modelling for formulation? – How could you help another partner to implement HT and/or modelling for formulation? – Which delegate in the room can help you overcome your challenges? – How are you looking to expand your use of modelling and/or HT? – What further skills do you need to integrate modelling and HT in your business? – What evidence do you need to secure internal funding for implementing these methods?

Providers Session Panel Discussion: Matching Opportunities with Providers Panellists include: –Elizabeth Colbourn (Intelligensys), Sander van Loon (VLCI), Paul Sherwood (STFC Daresbury Laboratory), Professors Jamshed Anwar and Peter Cowling from the University of Bradford, Andrew Coleman, Chemspeed Solution Providers on the panel introduce their expertise Collaborative funding opportunities Darren Ragheb, Chemistry Innovation KTN Wrap-up: Next steps Building of interest clusters and collaborations

Building Collaborations Spokespeople and facilitators –Are there any natural clusters following the break out groups? –Do the providers match the challenges? –Are there any gaps? –Have any partnerships been initiated already? Don’t be shy! –Any obvious follow up events / sessions / information needs emerging?

Follow Up TopicPartnersIF BDMInformation gaps? Funding mechanism?
