Diverse Environment

Southern Africa - Seasons Spring: September – October Summer: November – March Autumn: April – May Winter: June - August SOUTH AFRICA: Summers in South Africa are hot (daytime temperatures 25 – 35 degrees C). Northern and north-eastern regions have summer rainfall and cold and dry winters. East coast (from Durban north to Mozambique border) have a high humidity in summer, the winter temperatures average 22 – 25 degrees during the day with low humidity. Southern regions have winter rainfall and summers are hot and dry.

Climatic Zones

Cold and Warm Ocean

BOTSWANA The winters are pleasant with warm days and cool nights Temperatures during the day range between mid 20’ies (in winter) to mid 30’ies (in summer) In the desert, the days are hotter and the nights cooler than the rest of the country. The first rains of the summer arrive beginning/mid November. NAMIBIA Namibia is hot and sunny all year ‘round. There is very little rainfall, which is why it is a dry / desert country in most areas. The inland & northern areas (including Etosha National Park) can be extremely hot in summer. MOZAMBIQUE Mozambique has a hot and tropical climate, and it is best to travel in the cooler and drier periods (avoid December– end March unless you enjoy hot and humid weather).

So what is the best time to travel?

Peak season (20 Dec – 10 Jan): Northern hemisphere visitors have Christmas holidays, and want to get away from the cold winter Domestic tourism: It is South Africa’s Christmas / Summer holidays, and the 3 weeks of the year when all manufacturing and building businesses close for the annual holidays. High season (1 Oct – 30 Apr): Northern hemisphere visitors want to get away from the cold winter - Southern Africa has summer so warm and stable weather over the entire region. Low season (1 May – 30 Sep): Northern hemisphere visitors want to stay at home and enjoy the nice summer (?!?) Southern Africa has winter so some areas are rainy and chilly. SOUTH AFRICA - SEASONS

High season (July - October): Dry period, so animals move towards water sources and therefore easier to see. Temperatures generally pleasant. Shoulder season ( April – June & November): April – June: warm but not too hot, migration of huge herds of zebra and wildebeest November: the first rains arrive, so many animals have their babies during November Low season (December – March): Hot and at times humid weather Rainy season so less land area to do game viewing (in Okavango Delta) – more done by boat Good grazing so animals disperse over bigger areas, as they are not dependent on rivers and dams for water. BOTSWANA

Most popular time (highest price and difficult to find availability): Mid July – end October. Often too hot to visit desert / inland areas: December – end March NAMIBIA

VICTORIA FALLS High Water Level: June – September & January – mid April. Falls are great from both Zambian and Zimbabwean side of the Falls Whitewater Rafting possible Livingstone Island usually open for visits Low Water Level: October– January. Falls are better from Zimbabwean side of the Falls Whitewater Rafting possible Livingstone Island open for visits Peak Water Level: Mid April – end May. Falls are great from both Zambian and Zimbabwean side of the Falls Usually so much water that anyone approaching close enough, will be soaked Too wet to take photos close to the Falls Water level too high for Whitewater Rafting Water level too high for visit to Livingstone Island
