Structural data The Italian Ministry of Agriculture (Mipaaf) by SINAB disseminate structural statistics (organic surfaces, number of organic operators, distribution by region and kind of production) about the organic sector; SINAB statistics are obtained by administrative data and they have to be sent (mandatory) to the European Commission; With an information project that has been going on, it’s possible to improve quality data and have more detailed statistics. Import-export statistics SINAB collects only imports statistics of organic products from third countries, because they are the only that require an authorization; So in Italy there aren’t information about imports from EU countries or from “equivalent” Countries; There are not statistics about exports because the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) doesn’t distinguish between organic and non organic products and because control bodies are not available to give ministry data about export On exports exist only some qualitative and not continuative surveys. ISMEA-SINAB network An important evolution in the Italian organic statistics is the creation of networks between the data collectors; SINAB and ISMEA, with the contribution of CIHEAM, for example, have been projecting to integrate there activities in a new SINAB web-site (managed with ISMEA contribution) all of the statistics (structural and market ones) about organic sector in Italy; Organisation of all of the statistics in a data- warehouse, a common computing platform; In this way it’s possible to get more efficacy from a data processing and crossing point of view. The first achieved goal of the new SINAB network is this brand new publication:

Propositions and perspectives 1 Improvement of Italian statistics and collection (reinforcement and consolidation of price networks, collection of data also for specialised shops); Issue of a Quarterly Organic Sentiment Index based on two Panels (agricultural producers and transformers) managed by ISMEA; Active attendance at international networks that collect statistics about organic sectors; Connection with other European countries in order to have useful examples of networks; Improvement of Italian statistics and collection (reinforcement and consolidation of price networks, collection of data also for specialised shops); Issue of a Quarterly Organic Sentiment Index based on two Panels (agricultural producers and transformers) managed by ISMEA; Active attendance at international networks that collect statistics about organic sectors; Connection with other European countries in order to have useful examples of networks;
