Officer Training Leadership 1 Understanding Personality “Styles” 1

Officer Training Leadership 1 Why is “Style” important? Leadership style vs personality style Corporate research has discovered that a manager’s leadership style was responsible for 30% of the company’s bottom-line profitability! 2

Officer Training Leadership 1 The personality “Color” Test One simple study of personalities is called the “Color” test Personality styles are described as Red, Yellow, Green or Blue Most people don’t have one totally dominant color, but are blends of two colors, so you may see overlaps 3

Officer Training Leadership 1 The Color Test Circle only one word or phrase on each line that best describes you or what you like There are no right or wrong answers Take no more than 10 minutes to complete the test 4

Officer Training Leadership 1 The answers Using the Tally Sheet, one each line circle the color that is in the same column as the word you circled on the test page For example, if you circled “Sensitive” on the first line, you would circle “Blue” on the Tally Sheet Count the number of times each color is circled and write them on the lines at the bottom of the Tally Sheet 5

Officer Training Leadership 1 Red, Yellow, Blue or Green? Characteristics of the Reds Characteristics of the Yellows Characteristics of the Greens Characteristics of the Blues 6

Officer Training Leadership 1 What are your tendencies? Reds make good leaders Yellows are the glue that holds groups together Greens are neat and organized Blues can be quiet or shy, and don’t usually run with the pack 7

Officer Training Leadership 1 Group activity You’ve just been installed as Exalted Ruler of your Lodge You have some important decisions to make Consider how you can best utilize each personality style 8

Officer Training Leadership 1 Scenario 1 Your Lodge Treasurer has had to resign for personal reasons. Which type of personality would you want to choose as a replacement? 9

Officer Training Leadership 1 Scenario 2 Membership has been lagging in your Lodge, and you need to form a committee to go to some community events to recruit new members. Which personality styles would you select for this job? 10

Officer Training Leadership 1 Scenario 3 Member participation in Lodge events has been rapidly declining. You perceive that communication with members has not been very effective in promoting activities—you need a new idea. What style of personality might be effective in designing a new newsletter or social media campaign? 11

Officer Training Leadership 1 Scenario 4 Your Lodge is hosting the next District Deputy/VP clinic. This will be a multi-day event, with a lot of individual activities. As Exalted Ruler, you’ll be too busy to make sure it all comes together. You need an overall event coordinator. What personality style would you want to choose to make sure everything happens as planned? 12

Officer Training Leadership 1 Conclusion Your Lodge will have – About 20% Reds – A lot of Yellows – A few Greens – A few Blues Understanding the styles of each can make improve your effectiveness as a leader in your lodge 13
