Global Map Scripps Classroom Connection Finding volcanoes on the globe

1. Map Introduction 2. Form groups 3. Hand out list of volcanoes to each group 4. Each group researches their volcanoes (lat, lon, eruption type) 5. Groups place color coded stickers for each volcano on the world map 6. Students answer essential questions about volcanoes on the world map Scripps Classroom Connection Global Map Outline

● The world map used in this lesson is unique, it shows many important geophysical structures that geologists use to understand the physical Earth 1. Topography and Bathymetry (Smith and Sandwell, 1997). 2. Magnetic Lineations (Cande et al., 1989) 3. Earthquakes Scripps Classroom Connection 1. World Map

● Have students form groups of two or three ● Students will research information about a group of volcanoes chosen from a larger list of 450 volcanoes. ● The more groups, the fewer volcanoes each group has to research Scripps Classroom Connection 2. Form Groups

● There are 450 volcanoes (“Volcano List.txt”) for the class to place on the map ● Divide the list of volcanoes between each group of students ● Depending on the number of groups, there should be about volcanoes per group (or ~10 per student) Scripps Classroom Connection 3. Volcano List

● Determine whether each volcano is likely to be explosive (e.g., stratovolcano), or effusive (e.g., shield volcano). ● Find the latitude and longitude of each volcano Scripps Classroom Connection 4. Volcano Research

● Assign a sticker color for each type of volcano (i.e., yellow for explosive eruptions, red for effusive eruptions) ● Place the appropriate sticker for a volcano on the map ● Use the map’s latitude and longitude grid lines Scripps Classroom Connection 5. Stickers

● Once all volcanoes have been placed on the map, students should answer the essential questions (“Lesson7_Essential Questions”) ● Students should carefully look at the global map and take note of the relationship between earthquakes, volcanoes and plate boundaries. ● Active volcanoes are preferentially located along plate boundaries -Subduction zones, mid-ocean ridges ● Non-explosive shield volcanoes are common at hotspots ● Earthquakes and volcanoes are indicators of active plate tectonics Scripps Classroom Connection Conclusion
