EARTH SYSTEMS STAAR REVIEW

PLATE TECTONICS The current theory of plate tectonics is that the Earth’s crust is divided into around 12 large plates that move around on top of the plastic like layer of the asthenosphere. What is the force behind the movement of plates?

QUESTIONS FOR WORLD PLATE MAP: 1. What type of boundary is between the North American and Eurasian Plate and explain how it forms? 2. What type of boundary is between the Nazca and South American plate and explain how it forms?

QUESTIONS FOR A-D 1. Which two pictures are of convergent boundaries? 2. What type of landform can be formed at A? 3. What type of landform can be formed at B? 4. What type of boundary is C? 5. What type of landform can be formed at C? 6. What type of boundary is D? 7. What type of landform can be formed at D? 8. What type of natural disaster could happen at D?

TOPOGRAPHIC MAP As a class, discuss the answers to questions 1-5 on the topographic map worksheet. What would the shape of the coastline look like after hundreds of years of erosion by ocean waves?

THE SUN’S ENERGY - What provides the energy that drives convection within the atmosphere and oceans, producing wind and ocean currents? -What causes ocean surface currents? -What causes deep water ocean currents?

WEATHER MAPS What type of front is moving through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina? What type of weather is Texas experiencing? What type of pressure system is in Michigan? What type of weather would Michigan be experiencing? Which direction is the warm front north of New York and Maine moving?
