How did East India Trading company control and rule India? o It was given power by the British government to become actively involved in India's political and military affairs o To rule India, the East India Company had its own soldiers and forts. It hired Indian soldiers to protect the company’s interest in the religion What is a sepoy?? -A sepoy is an Indian.

It started in 1857 because of a growing Indian distrust of the British; the British call it the Great Rebellion or the Sepoy Mutiny. There was a rumor that the British were giving the Indian troops new bullets that were greased in cow and pig fat. –What is important about the Cow to Hindus? The Pig to Muslims? The cow was sacred to the Hindus and the pig was “taboo”, or unacceptable to the Muslims. M u t i n y

Why were the sepoys arrested? What did they do? A group of sepoys at an army refused to load their rifles with the new bullets so they got arrested. After getting arrested the sepoys went on a rampage and killed 50 European men, women, and children.

Why did the revolt not last? Within a year Indian troops loyal to the British troops, had crushed the rebellion. British Troops Indian Troops

What were the results of the uprising? It was terrible in both sides. They killed two hundred defenseless women and children in a building known as the House of the Ladies.
