ART I OPHS ART DEPARTMENT Media and Techniques of Visual Art

Drawing Materials: pencils (4H, 2H HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, Ebony) erasers, charcoal, pastels, crayons, conte crayons, pen, ink, marker, etc. Techniques: stippling, crosshatching, hatching, shading, blending, shading, subtractive, contour line, outlining, gestural line, sketch, measuring

Painting Materials: watercolor, tempera, acrylic, oil Techniques: wash, mixing, blending, overlapping, layering, wet on wet, dry brush, pointillism/stippling, impasto, wax resist, splatter, glaze, outlining, dripping. Viscosity= consistency of the paint, ex: thick or thin viscosity.

Printmaking Materials: ink, plate, printmaking paper, brayer, burnishing etching and cutting tools, etc. Techniques: stencil, silkscreen, lithography, monotype, etching, dry-point, relief (woodblock, lino-cut)

Collage Materials: paper, magazine paper, handmade papers, mixed media, photographs, etc. Techniques: cutting, gluing, tearing, layering, image transfer

Sculpture Materials: ceramics, found objects, wood, stone, plaster, paper-mache, cardboard, metal, etc. Techniques: additive/ subtractive, in-the-round, relief, carving, chiseling, cutting, sgriffito, piercing, slab building, coil Building, slip and score, rolling, welding

Textile Materials: fabric, thread, string, muslin, burlap, silk screen Techniques: sewing, gluing, dying, painting, batik, printing
