2

This Presentation Will Address: How did these standards come about? Why do we need these new standards? What do we plan to do with these standards? 3

When did California adopt the NGSS? On September 4, 2013, California formally adopted the Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, K-12 and Appendices A-M.

NGSS Adoption Update Currently, fourteen states and the District of Columbia have adopted the NGSS. They include Iowa, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, and West Virginia, along with the District of Columbia (D.C.).

NGSS Development Twenty-six states, including California as a lead state, and their broad-based teams worked together with a 41-member writing team and partners throughout the country to develop the standards. It was a joint effort between the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science with Achieve being the entity responsible for the publication of the NGSS.

What is the NGSS?  They are the new science standards for the state of California.  The NGSS describe the key scientific ideas and practices that all students (K-12) should learn by the time they graduate from high school.  The NGSS is an assessment framework. They are written as Performance Expectations describing what students should be able to do and are intended to be endpoints in instruction.

Why change the Science standards now? 8 The previous standards were adopted in There have been significant advances in science and technology; therefore updated science standards were necessary for students of California. Senate Bill 300 required that new standards be brought to the State Board of Education by 2013.

NGSS comes from… A Framework for K-12 Science Education A Framework for K-12 Science Education Published in July 2011 Divided into three dimensions which represent significant shifts in teaching and learning:

3 Dimensions of NGSS DISCIPLINARY CORE IDEAS: Foundational ideas needed for every student to be able to begin his or her own inquiries and practices. Physical Science (PS) Life Science (LS) Earth and Space Science (ESS) Engineering, Technology and Applications of Science (ETS)

3 Dimensions of NGSS CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS: Concepts that apply to all four science domains (life, physical, earth and space, engineering) Patterns Cause and Effect: Mechanism and explanation Scale, proportion and quantity Systems and System models Energy and matter: Flows, cycles and conservation. Structure and function Stability and change

3 Dimensions of NGSS PRACTICES: Describe how scientists build theories and models about the way our world, and systems within it, works. 1)Asking questions and defining problems 2)Developing and using models 3)Planning and carrying out investigations 4)Analyzing and interpreting data 5)Using mathematics, information & computer technology and computational thinking 6)Constructing explanations 7)Engaging in argument from evidence 8)Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

NGSS is NOT… A curriculum. A method of instruction. The “Common Core” of Science.

Current CA Standard vs NGSS Standard Current CA Content StandardNGSS 2. Unbalanced forces cause changes in velocity. As a basis for understanding this concept: b. Students know when an object is subject to two or more forces at once, the result is the cumulative effect of all the forces. c. Students know when the forces on an object are balanced, the motion of the object does not change. e. Students know that when the forces on an object are unbalanced, the object will change its velocity (that is, it will speed up, slow down, or change direction). f. Students know the greater the mass of an object, the more force is needed to achieve the same rate of change in motion. MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on balanced (Newton’s First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newton’s Second Law), frame of reference, and specification of units.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to forces and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame and to change in one variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.]

Communication 21 Teacher and administrator professional development Prepared PPT presentation for sites to share with families Letter to families FAQ’s for families and community Website information and resources

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS): Adoption 22 Benefits of adoption: Assists EGUSD teachers and staff in preparing students for current and foreseeable expectations for college and careers, particularly in STEM fields. Aligns expectations and resources to other districts across the state and upcoming statewide science assessments.
