● Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) audit is a systematic process. ● It is used for assessing compliance and verifying conformance with established guidelines or best practices in occupational health and safety. See figure 1 ● The approaches to OHSMS are rooted in the 1960’s. ● Dormac is a multi-national ship repair company which has its workshops around Southern Africa ● Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) audit is a systematic process. ● It is used for assessing compliance and verifying conformance with established guidelines or best practices in occupational health and safety. See figure 1 ● The approaches to OHSMS are rooted in the 1960’s. ● Dormac is a multi-national ship repair company which has its workshops around Southern Africa Aim To carry out Dormac OHSMS audit so as to determine the gaps in the initial status review, obtain sufficient evidence to assess compliance with legislation and the standards (best practices) and provide feedback to the company. Methodology Analysis of sources of audit evidence:  Documentation and records analysis  Performance indicators analysis. See figure 2  Interview with management. See figure 2  Interview with sample of workers. See figure 2  Distribution of questionnaire to sample of workers. See figure 2  Direct observations. See figure 3  Performance measurement including occupational medical surveillance examinations conducted at random to: ■ Measure Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). See figure 4 ■ Examine Tuberculosis (TB). ■ Measure Occupational Lung Disease (OLD). Results  The review of initial status reveals weaknesses (gaps) in the OHSMS. (Figure 5)  The result from gap analysis of initial status review shows a score of 38 % i.e. 33 out of the total of 85 scores thus required 52 % to meet up the expected standard.  All the elements examined failed to reach a best practice score of 80%,  The average percentage (%) score of Dormac conformances OH&S practices to potential achievable (standard) of BS 18001:2007 standard is 43 %. (Figure 6)  Immediate and serious risks threat to the company were discovered through Risk Matrix from Risk Assessment conducted. (Figure 7)  p  Risk Risk Matrix (Figure 8). Conclusion  All the sections failed to reach a best practice score of 80%, therefore, they needed to be subjected to corrective and improvement action plan prioritization.  Greater effort is needed to implement OHSMS standards to protect workers’ health and safety.  The management team should ensure that the OHSAS management system is adapted as the overall management system Figure 1: Outline Guidelines of OHSMS Figure 2: Data Collection & Analysis Framework Figure 3: Direct Observation Report Figure 4: Precision Sound Level Meter Figure 5: Result of Gap Analysis Figure 6: Result from Verification of Evidence Figure 7: Risk Matrix OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AUDIT OF DORMAC (PTY) LTD IOSH17: HEALTH AND SAFETY – FIT FOR BUSINESS Dormac OH&S Practices
