Education Catering Service Sustainable Catering: what does it mean and how do we achieve it?

Who are we?  The City’s provider of school food  Working in full co-operative partnership with PAPH and schools  Primary schools  Secondary schools  Academies  250 staff  Adult community meals

What do we do? Education Act 1996 sets out the statutory requirement to: -  provide a free school meal to those pupils registered as eligible  provide a paid meal upon request to any pupil Education & Inspection Act 2006 (and amendments in 2007, 2008, 2009) sets out the mandatory Food & Nutritional Standards that must be applied to those meals for all maintained schools - with evidence of compliance available. School Food Plan

Where does our food come from? Our food contracts are currently being evaluated for award but for all our contracts we have to take into account a number of factors: -  Value of the business and EU law  Number and size of contracts  Food and fuel cost increases The way to achieve this was to write our specifications around the principles of the Soil Associations Food for Life Award

Where does our food come from?  Three local suppliers covering all requirements  All have a presence in Devon and Cornwall  Road miles and carbon footprint significantly reduced  Increased contract spend into Plymouth and surrounding area by up to £1.6m per annum  High quality local produce  Shared deliveries  Food costs per meal maintained  Meal numbers up

Exciting times ahead and what’s next  Creation of a new Local Authority co-operative Trading Company  Company limited by shares owned by schools and the Council  Universal Infant Free School Meals and new food standards  Broadening our role with Public Health Brad Pearce - Education Catering ManagerTel:
