Properties of materials, components and structures for aerospace Applications of ISO Dr. Norman Swindells, CEng, FIMMM Ferroday Ltd, UK 15/04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 1

ASD-SSG report AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe Through Life Cycle Interoperability A critical strategic lever for competitiveness The ASD vision of through life-cycle interoperability is that ‘All players of the global aerospace value network will be able to share digital information securely throughout the life of the products and services’. …initial set of recommendations that particularly recognises the value of ISO STEP Application Protocols, and intends to make these standards the cornerstone of the PLM information interoperability 15/04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 2

Engineering property representation A material is a product and can therefore be represented by an ISO information model for a product The value of an engineering property for a product has to be associated with a data environment (metadata) that defines its validity. ISO : ‘Material and other engineering properties’ (1998 and 2008) Generic information model for any property of any product with its data environment Understanding (semantic) of an engineering property is defined by a measurement process ISO : ‘Engineering properties for product design and verification’ (2009) : Information model for any property of any product measured by any process Describes an audit trail from a design value through the processes that were used to derive the value Names of processes and their properties can be defined in a reference dictionary conforming to ISO /04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 4

Overview of ISO /04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 5 Product details Processes

ISO Engineering properties for product design and verification Product, product history Testing processes Resource properties Property representation Static, dynamic, directional, tabular Numerical, descriptive, mathematical values Functions, tensors, etc Uncertainty, reliability of all values Substance composition and internal structure Persons, organisations Approvals, qualifications, certification Documents, files External references Effectivity Language Locations Requirements Resources 15/04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 6

Data dictionary for properties Principle of part 235 is that the meaning (semantic) of an engineering property is defined by the method used to measure it. Two kinds of properties: Measured by comparison with a standard quantity (length, resistance, time, etc) Measured by simulating a behaviour (strength, fracture toughness, hardness, etc) Both need the conditions that were applicable to the value at the measurement – data environment from ISO Semantics of the second type require a definition of the method of measurement. An application of ISO Parts library can provide these definitions in a classification of testing methods.

Scope of application Product location, identification and assembly Product composition, structure and properties (e.g. fracture toughness) for critical engineering assessment NDT instrument identification and settings NDT probe description and beam settings NDT process: type of inspection, datum, start and finish of scan, direction, etc. Reference to standards and written procedures NDT results: location, shape and type of defect NDT verification process: of process, of product integrity Qualifications of organizations, personnel and approvals Customer and contract identifications 15/04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 14

Conclusions SC4 technology provides many advantages for aerospace and for other high value engineering Comprehensive and detailed information that is scalable, expandable and combinable from different sources. Provides coherent information representation throughout the product life independent from proprietary software Interoperability for digital data between all the actors in the design, construction and operation of the product International standardisation as an open system should be a comfort to the regulators and for certification 15/04/2015(c) Ferroday Ltd 2015, Vico Equense 15
