Capitalization Capitalize the first word of a sentence Example: Soccer has been called the only international language. Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation that is a complete sentence. Example: Henry James once wrote to a friend, “It’s a complex fate, being an American.” Do not capitalize the first word of a quotation if it is not a complete sentence. Example: Churchill said he had “nothing to offer blood, toil, tears, and sweat.”

Capitalization Capitalize the pronoun “I” and the interjection “O” Example: He said, “I believe the first words of the national anthem are ‘O Say Can You See.’” Proper nouns are capitalized – names of people and animals, titles of people (Sir, President, Princess), nationalities / ethnic groups (German, Nigerian), organizations / institutions (University of Georgia), buildings, trade names (Pepsi, Pizza Hut), Documents (Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence), Geographical Terms (Africa, Mediterranean Sea), Planets, Ships and Vehicles, Historical Events / Eras (the Renaissance, Battle of Agincourt), Markers of Time (Saturday, Thanksgiving), Religious Terms (Christianity, Judaism, Atheism)
